Cheapest, I have tried the other fancy fuels and they have made no difference in my 1.0 and 1.4 (track car at the time) at all apart from after a few tanks of shellV in my 1.0, some dirt ended up in the carb, I blamed the fuel for moving the grime lol

good i've got a fuel filter on mine then!

I've tried Momentum and V-Power in my XE, neither are any better than the cheap stuff. You have to remember that in the early 90's there wasn't the choice of fuels that we get today, so manufacturers only really knew unleaded as just that, no fancy names, branding gimmicks etc...

The Shell fuel does have some cleaning chemicals, but only really similar to what a bottle of redex can do every few tanks, so its swings and roundabouts really.

If a car is mapped to use a higher octane fuel than I am all for using it, however a 1993 Vauxhall engine can have whatever is cheapest lol.

hmm guess so, since I started using vpower I fell like there is a slight difference in the way she runs and she seems to get slightly better mpg too, (Although I might be imagining it).

Whatever is cheap in the Nova, GT4 gets vpower or momentum. It doesn't like 95 at all and nothing here sells 97.

No point using 'decent' fuel in an N/A that isn't tuned for the higher octane tbh

I should be using v power in the golf but i dont and i put the cheepest in the nova atm then i might treat it to v power when ive dropped my valverin

Waste of time using the overpriced fuel in most cars as they don't have the ign advance far enough to make use of it, thus effectively retarding the ignition and compounding the power loss with less energy in the fuel.

Only old stuff with adjustable ignition timing warrants vpower as its the closest you will get to old 4 star.or jap performance stuff like jacks.
LMFAO at a golf needing it lol lol lol

I use the normal diesel in my daily and the gt4 gets 99 since its an import.

I tend to only use 99ron in my cars, so just shell or tesco but i do feel shell is the best out of the 2.

I use Shell V-power racing in the rally car but it might only give me 1 or 2 BHP more, in a Standard Nova it will make no differences only to your wallet.

Any unleaded, I don't believe in any of this high octane bull. I even put some mixed petrol as diesel in the nova recently when a lad at work filled the workvan up with petrol instead of diesel. Kicked a bit of smoke out but still runs sweet :)

am i right in thinking its only the older pre cat engines that where designed to run on 4 star that your meant to use high octane super unleaded in??

I've also heard higher octane is better for older engines, I Used to bung tesco stuff in mine, but last few weeks started using shell fuelsave, and she runs very well on it! saying that the old carb will swallow anything lol

a lot of negative comments towards higher octane fuel. Its not that its a waste of money, its just a waste of money in your car. Anything that has active knock-control will see a benefit as the timing will increase in steps until it gets knock then continuously optimises to keep it as close to max adv as possible. Given that this point will be with more adv than a normal 95-97 RON fuel there will likely be a good bit of increase in torque.
When i see the amount of effort, expense people go to on random mods on here for a few marginal gains, an extra couple of pence per litre isnt such a stupid idea for a couple extra lb/ft of torque.

even a HC 1.2 setup with the max adv wound up would see gains. you would also be able to run an extra couple lb's boost on a turbo car with no extra mods. but as could running the car on a cold day....so you have to know what's going on.

dont poo-poo the fuel just because you dont understand how your engines (or fuel) works or because you mixed a tenners worth of good stuff with a half tank of Tesco value stuff.

If you map a car with 97 RON and then again with V-Power or Ultimate, and sit the timing tables side by side you will see there is difference particularly around max load/RPM, given that you increase timing to the point of max torque, that proves it does 'something' and has a positive outcome on total torque and therefore- power.

Diesel. Well I drive a van for work and its all I drive. Best not put petrol in it like I did in the last diesel van in my last job. Thankfully I didn't start it but it did cost the company £145 to remove the £60 worth of petrol I put in then another £60 worth of diesel lol.

The company went under a few months later.
