Upratred camshaft or camshaft kit?

There's plenty of listings around gumtree and eBay for second hand fast road camshafts but I once witnessed my mates 8 valve golf gti that had just been fitted with a whizzy cam completely beat his standard valve springs etc to bits , so can you fit just a whizzy cam to a nova or anything without fitting the rest of the uprated bits that come in the kit without replicating the actions of my mates golf ?

Pay the extra and get a full kit from Kent Cams which will include the appropriate valvetrain

Just a mild fast road type cam nothing extreme but just wondered if anyone had actually done it ? The whole kits are clearly going to be better but you just don't see whole kits 2 nd hand
