Just looking to see how far I can get with cheeky discounts.

There is the online 10% discount stuff to collect in store, I'd then like to try and use the 10% discount voucher from british cycling when paying in store... Will that work to give 2 lots of 10% off (not 20% lol )

Usualy discount offers have in the small print "not to be used in conjunction with any other offer"

I know, but I can't get access to the British cycling voucher unless I hand over cash, so wanted to find out if it was possible to compound the deals before shelling out.

Halfords trade card might help

Halfords trade card might help

Apparently doesn't work on bikes, plus it would be on full list rather than discounted price :(

Found out from a bike forum they can be used together. Win win win win, although have found a second hand bike that would be a bargain too.

Stuart

A voodoo bizango from halfords.... Its got rave reviews, and with some huge savings I can upgrade the front and rear mechs.

The second hand one is a lapierre full bounce lol

stu, I wouldn't buy a bike from Halfords, but that's just my opinion! what type of bike are you after?

EDIT: too slow lol

Stuart

I'm not keen due to snobbery, but at the same time some of them are rather good.

How about if you price the voodoo at £460...... ;)

conad

I still wouldn't, I don't mean to sound like a d!ck but everything's micky mouse on the voodoo and wont last 5 minutes or perform at all.... its all for show.

So did halfords/voodoo pay for the great review in the mags....

very true, and I havnt riden 1 to give a true opinion. im just going from my experiences over the years having built, riden and raced bikes most of my life, it really is a case of buy cheap buy twice, and Halfords always sold the type of bikes that were covered in bling to attract the people wanting them as Christmas presents lol, but I havnt been in 1 for years so they may have changed. just an opinion that's all. :thumb:

Why dont you buy a bike through the cycling to work scheme? You will get 40% off a bike through paticipating bike shops. A few guys at my work have bought bikes this way.

I've been fannying about looking at bikes for 9 months now, learnt lots eg cube bikes being utter turd but on paper are very very alluring etc, Scott's being pure porn but too expensive for the base model and so on.
The boardman rigs are fret but suffer from brand snobbery as do the voodoos, the big off put for me is the mechs but since I'd be paying shag all I can upgrade when they start to give up, and still be quids in still.
Sorely tempted by the on one scandal, but a pain to test as its 2 hours away lol

No cycle to work scheme at my work, and looking into it, its not as cost effective as it makes out these days.

if you buy from halfords i'd be checking the bike over thoroughly before buying it. crank and bottom bracket especially. i've seen a few cranks spin off and destroy threads. also seen forks on backwards and same with seatposts!

personally i'd never buy a bike new either unless i was custom building it but thats just me!

it might also just be me but i feel as if newer bikes have way less spec for the money than they used to. i'm not fully into whats going on in the bike scene anymore but looking at the voodoo you said you were thinking of for the price its at (rrp) i was a bit surprised at the components. even the kona conad posted aswell. i remember my wee brother buying a scott only a few years ago with super light alloy frame, full deore but xt r mech and hubs, mavic rims, marzocchi exr fork for the same price and they are all good solid long lasting components.

edit - ok, i asked my brother when that was and he thinks 2006 ish so maybe more than just a few years!

Yeah the Scott I got in 2007 for £500 and then upgraded to disc brakes for less than the price gap to the next model, was way better specced than most upto a grand these days. Its been somewhat of a shock tbh.

I think its a combo of the weak pound and the cycle to work scheme pushing bikes upto a grand for no reason. Its a shame.

I'm after a bike but just a cheap one for pottering about/help me get fitter but I cant afford/don't want a £500+ bike I just want something about £100 that's going to last, also I seem to have a habit of breaking chains and the derailer thingy and my bikes always seem to get stolen lol

Stuart

Get a single speed lol

I'd rather a mountain bike so if I want I can go off road, which I most likely will.

a mate has a hub geared mtb with something daft like 11 speeds & no external derailleur (i looked it up lol)

Yeah the rolhoff or shimano versions are great, but they are a grand just for the hub lol and don't last off road.

You can get single speed off road bikes womanwoo.
But for £100 just buy anything as its all a bit poo anyway. I'm constantly tweaking the gears and cables on a (then) £400 spcialized ffs.

Did you get your bike Stu?

Stuart
19-05-13, 10:13 PM
Nope, I decided that the bizango, while being good, isn't great enough for my mind lol
Plus the front and rear mechs were lower spec than those on the bike I'm using now and I have to adjust that weekly.

On one have a sale for the next week with hopefully some better prices on their scandals. If not then ill order a canyon Yellowstone 5.9 as its actually decent spec for under budget cash :)

cant you just take up extreme penny-farthing racing? there are no gears to worry about and the wheels are much bigger.

Been there, done that, got terrible service. Would sooner not net rep meritlover than use evans ever again.

It was Waterloo and one near great ormund street, about 6 years ago. There is nothing from the mainstream that is good enough fork spec for my budget, hence the on one or a canyon, or even a radon.
