Is a gripper diff the one with plates? I want either for a better launch. Which would be better?

I thought the atb ones were best as they're geared, where as the plate ones are either on or off and are really aggressive.

No, IMHO its the other way round, plates are 'on' all the time and feel lovely where as atb's have a mind of their own and do scary on off stuff.

Tbf I never experienced the on off part with my atb diff, and I would recommend one all day long.

So would would be best for road use with the odd fast launch?

Got an atb on mine and its grrrrrrreat. Mate had a plate in his and it was undrivable on the road. But it did have stupidly aggressive ramp angles irrc.

Plate for 1/4 mile or Forrest rallying

Atb for road and occasional track

'twas what I was told by a gearbox builder, the guy kinda knows his stuff,

My friend runs a ATB in his astra turbo in a F20 with quaife turret and direct linkage, pretty awesome setup actually

My feelings are the other way round, well actually I just hate ATB's lol
On the road a plate diff feels great, on track a plate feels great, in a forrest I'm sure they are great lol

Quaife is a nice road diff but not comparable to a plated diff like the Gripper unit. The whole point of the LSD is to give you control and sadly a ATB cannot give you that off the throttle which in some cases is worrying.

Both are a massive improvement over a stock open diff though and I only had the Quaife in my own car but having driven with plated diffs more often I would advise anyone to take that option if they are in the market for one.

They don't seem to come up that cheap secondhand Alex, more often than not you just get the diff in a rebuilt gearbox for the same money as a new diff alone. More demand than supply me thinks.

Yes, having let off a bit tomuch midcorner and found the car wanting to go a different way.. Very scarey. I did a thread on Mig over "how to drve with a diff" as i found it could be scarey at times...
