View Full Version : 8.1 EDS intercooler in nova seems a fail

I've got a eds FMIC off my Calibra which I thought I might as well use on the nova.
So I cut the front back to make a bit more room.

But being 90mm thick it still needed the bumper cut.

But the hole is now mahoosive :O and I'm not liking it. :(

Also the pipes would have to loop around through wheel arch (not good)
And the inlet and outlets are at different levels at each end.

I read frontera ones are commonly used. But what other FMIC's are people using?
Pics as well if you can.

I don't mind seeing some IC at the front. Or cutting a wee bit out bottom grill!

I'd get the ends moved so they point in to the bay.... (what i did for mine)

I see,
Can you remember how thick your IC is?
What's it off?

I have that intercooler but seems to fit my bumper much better for some reason, it fits real nice in mine but can't see why as mine fitted the same, mine sits tight and flush with bumper.

^ that's how mine sits, just realised ur not usin a gsi front bumper, I am and so is nova above, they must sit further forward then

Mine just has the slat cut out the hole is standard size

Yea that's same as mine, I never had to cut the bumper out, it fitted around intercooler nice.

Thanks,
I recon your right! The GSI bumper must stick out more! On lower part.
Mine looks further out at bottom edge.

Where did you run the pipe work. Dose it come into wheel arch?

Yeah cut the corners on the front valence and routed through arch miles away from the wheels and I run 17s and never had a problem same set up is going on my van

Used to run the same cooler too...

Yea my pipe work is the same, it comes out just under the chassis legs if Iirc, I have never had any issues with wheels rubbing, there miles away, and u can't see we're the valence has even been cut out once bumper is on. The bumper hides boost pipes aswell.

Looks more and more like I need a GSI bumper.

Yes this is a fail. The clearence step in the crossmember impedes abot 50% airflow through the fins. You might as well use a smaller I/C which actually fits properly.

Martin.p
14-05-13, 02:18 PM
Yes, I was intending on drilling holes in the plate I've fitted. Because under the cross member there are 2 long slots and they would allow air to flow out.
Ok it's not the best set up.
The other thing is the core on the eds is 600 mm long and 90mm thick so technically you would have more cooling area than on a shorter thinner cooler which would still sit in same place.

If the cooler was thinner and taller it would be behind plastic part and again of no use.

I don't think there is a 100% win situation.

I have to admit, I spent a lot of time and in the end money on making the EDS cooler fit that I got practically for nothing. In hindsight I would of just paid out the money for a propper fit in the 1st place.

Ye that should let plenty of water in and promote corrosion

The holes under there would let lots of water or spray in under standard condition I recon. Could argue the continuous flow of warm air coming out through cooler would dry/ air the area.

Either way I'm not making a case for pro eds.
I've searched thread after thread and all seem to cut cross member back whatever the IC.

And even with a frontera one which are thinner. And have pipe work at 90 degree angles (:/ )
I don't know if that would fit behind std mk2 bumper.
As its been said the bottom lip seems to sit further out on the GSI bumper.

Like simps I am seeing if the IC I already have can/will work just because I have it from Calibra.

And others seem to do a fair job of it and others have other set ups which have good and bad points.

You say get one that actually fits properly.
What do you mean?
As in not cutting front? Or for std bumper or for pipe work reasons? Without moving rad? (Because 90 degree bends look like rad needs moving)
Pics or links would be great.
I'm not happy with what I've got at the mo and open to options! Especially a proper fit one.

Thanks

Its very easy to relocate the rad to the centre to be able to run pipes down the side which will be better for flow too with less pipework. Once moved I would then be staring down the front of your bumper to see what room you have and get the cardboard out to make templates. I think you might struggle with your bumper tho and may need to go up to a GSI. I would also be looking to chop out the whole front panel if I did it again and replace with tubing and make tabs off everything from that being conscious to strengthen where needed obviously. Thats what I would do anyway. I did a guide on moving the rad to the middle towards the end of page 1 on here - Moving Nova Rad (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?98463-*HOW-TO*-Fit-an-F28-to-a-big-block-nova)

Well thanks to jake for the intercooler and picklesSE8 for the bumper today.
I've been at it again.

I use a frontera they're so easy to route and keep relatively hidden.
