As per Andy reply, if on track yes, but road not necessarily.

I have on mine, and thats a road car but as has been said, its not essential. If you have it, you may as well plumb it in IMO as it's better to have one, then to ever need one and not have it.

surely the best bet it to have one but have it controlled by a thermostat so its only used when needed

tbh, even on track I wouldnt bother.... Just use decent oil and eliminate a failure point and excess weight.

How about a compromise of no oil cooler, but have a cool running thermostat for your coolant? I removed mine oil cooler due it it being damaged when I took the 20XEout of it's original Astra GTE. I used the threaded stud from a 20NE (8valve engine) that the oil filter bolts onto once I'd taken the oil coolers sandwhich plate out.

No, cool running stats are just bad for the engine.

Agreed.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Stuart again.

IOU.

If the car is a road car, remove the cooler the proper way. Using the spacing bolt for the filter (used to remove the sandwitch plate)

Which cars were fitted originally with an oil cooler? They must have been fit for a reason, I'd just fit one anyway.

Big heavy stuff that could get long duration loads on and heat things up

i removed mine on my xe nova only because the one with it was damaged. i used a 1.2 nova oil filter adapter to fit the filter straight onto the pump, i plan on fitting a good cooler in the future as my engine gets a lot of abuse!

Not true. Late xes didn't have them as standard. I broke a Calibra which didn't have one. Then researched it and found none do.

My M reg calibra has/had one
I was going to ask how and where people fit them in but I've been dealing with IC at mo and thought I'd worrie about oil cooler next.
So, most of you ain't running them!?
Sorry to seem thick. But what are you changing/adding/removing to blank it off?
Pics?

When using mine on the road I never bothered and it seemed fine, after heavy track use I fitted one. Mocal 10/13 row size would be sufficient I think.

To fit one, use the thermostat sandwich plate on the oil pump, lines running to the front and a location of your choosing. e.g. behind grille, bumper.

To not fit one, use the 8v (e.g. 1.2 8v) thread on the oil pump to directly fit the oil filter with no sandwich plate.

Yours was a let, then all come with them due to extra heat as the oil run thought the turbo.

Mine is mounted right behind the front panel in the wheel arch, with a hole cut in the front so air hits it in the face.
