View Full Version : Sand blasting
A friend has said he can get me a blasting gun from work to connect straight to my compressor, but there's no sand/shot. I've seen some stuff on eBay but it's fine grade and says the material needs to be oil/grease free. As I want to do my bay and under the car its going to be pretty grubby... Can anyone tell me what I'll need?
Is this not a job for soad media?
There is a fella in Ellesmere Port that'll do your bay for about £100 in crushed glass or soda and he said to me it'll only take four hours whilst you wait
The cars not rolling and I'd rather do it myself. Just not sure what media to use x
This stuff?

Soda doesn't work on rust or corrosion of any sort, or sealer or heavily soiled oil deposits,
I've tried it :(

Ah. ****ter. :(
I only suggested it, as shot etc can be harsh on thin gauge steel.
what sort of gun??
what cfm compressor.
we had a truck sand blasted. they used a road compressor. it had 65hp & fed a 1" pipe. the gun was linked to a hopper that we fed 25kg bags of media into....
those cheap ones that look like a car spray painters gun are ok for small spots that need a clean up... but useless on anything sizeable
I've not actually seen the gun yet but he says it looks like a spray gun. I was going to wire wheel it all first then finish it with the blaster. My compressors got 11cfm free air flow. I'm not expecting it to be easy or perfect, but it's worth a shot (pun intended lol)
If it looks.like a apray gun it may just be a 'spot blast' gun.
Waste of time.
It will make a right mess.
Very true, it's probably a spotter.... Grrr! Not bothered about mess, I've got an empty garage and a big brush lol

juse use play pit sand, see my thread, id di a few things with it. works pretty well. and its like a quid for god knows hwo much. works exactly the same, even if it takes longer its so cheap who gives a crap!
we used kiln dried block paving sand.. thats cheap & very fine grained.

I had a 11cfm compressor 90 ltr and I managed a spot about the size of a 50p. The tank couldn't keep the pressure.
Ended up getting someone to do it. Their compressor was towed on the back of a van! That did the job. He used kiln dried mixed with glass. Worked a treat but there's still sand in my garage lol

if you use a pot type gun, you will empty it in seconds. its ok for touching up spots or blasting a seam before welding but if you are thinking about doing any large areas then just forget it.
the hopper guns (which look the same but have a tube to a hopper) last a bit longer but they really need the proper abrasive grit. If you use fine sand you will find it just chokes the hose and wont lift properly. It doesnt work as well as the proper stuff anyway.
i would blast a seam and then wire wheel it. if any grit or residue is left its a nightmare to weld. bits of grit in a seam pop and gas up the weld and its not great. makes a HELL of a mess.
it depends what you want to achieve at the end of the day i suppose.
I just cant see the need for it myself.
Iv always managed fine with a knotted wire wheel on a grinder
Cheers for your input guys you've really helped. It looks like I'll try and move the car and get someone to do it for me, next problem being it can't really go on a spit to do underneath, and I know they won't have 1 anyway.... Blaaaag!
I'd save alot of pissing about a use a wire wheel on a grinder. You'll bare the underside in a few hours.
I've got a few drill wire wheels, just didn't think it'd do a good enough job? I want to epoxy primer underneath and the bay, was under the impression it needs to be spotless for it to adhere properly.
You need a grinder, 5x the speed. 1k rpm is what you want, which is most angle grinders. Ive only used to types of epoxy primer and they where ok on most surfaces, but best on bare metal.
