So through several sources it is my understanding that sr novas had twin choke carbs as standard and apparently this is after 1985 , if so my car just missed out on one so how likely am I to find one? And is it just a straight swap as I'm assuming it is ?

Yes they did, and they can be found on ebay usually although many go for the Weber 32/34 which is manual choke and seen as a good replacement for the troublesome Pierburg 2E3 that is fitted to 85 on SRs (and others)

Pierburg 2E3's command good money due to the motorsport interest in them. If you source one, you will need the manifold, throttle cable, water pipes to attach auto choke and a suitable air filter.

I'm put off already didn't realise they're auto choke thanks for clearing that up

the old single choke isn't that bad... and its definitely good on economy.

The auto choke works if it is set up right, and having the second barrel makes a difference when it opens up affter 4000 revs.

Yeah ile keep the standard single I think I like the car for its simplicity and was just trying to modify without it being obvious as I want it to be unmolested when it's time is up

Also forgot to say, it is apparently possible to remove the auto choke and convert to manual.

When using one on my 1.4 track car last year, I removed teh auto choke as there were no hoses etc for it, just sat revving the car gently for w few minutes before driving off.

I thought the early 2E3's were manual choke from 85-86

I don't mind manual choke on cars so the autochoke is of no bonus to me but, the second barrel is what it's about, although getting a 2e3 that has all the vacuums etc working is quite rare.

My own SR 2nd barrel didn't work for the first few years, it was a revalation when I figured it out. From what I gather they often don't work and people don't notice the difference between the twin and single barrel pierbergs. The reason is obvious, if the 2nd barrel vacuum etc doesn't work then it is a single barrel carb, also the working range for the 2nd barrel is only 4000 revs plus.

A lot of people rather the weber equivalent, I haven't driven one so can't advise but, if a 2e3 is working properly it is a bit jekyll and hyde, torqish as normal but when revved hard the 2nd barrel gives a wee boost, not bad for a 1.3.

Would you really want to drive your SR that hard all the time though? Also being original has some charm and for all the difference the little boost makes?

stick with what you have i'd say. the 1b and 2e are both good carbs for road cars :thumb:

With some mild engine mods the Sierra 1.8 Pierburg is supposed to be excellent and comparable to twin DCOE's but with a standard look

I've got a 32 36 twin choke weber which was liberated from a 2 l Capri , which I considered making an inlet for and re jetting to suit and blah blah but as jimbo said its working fine and plenty good enough for a road car

I think that is a totally different carb.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's the replacement carb for fords of that era and I saw the words weber and saw two barrels and got excited when I saw 32 36 on it only to realise the nova a are being fitted with 32 34s lol

I hated my 32 34 weber carb, it was far worse than my old pierburg 2e
