you want the 3M rubberized stuff, or U-pol Graviguard, both overpaintable

I can only find the rubberized stuff in aerosols... and its from American ebay (ridiculous price). I've been on their uk website and this is all they have http://catalogue.3m.co.uk/en_gb/gb-aad/Coatings

im getting stressed beyond belief about this now as I just want to get on with things. I've sent them an email asking for advice but no reply as yet.

We keep it on the shelf, doesn't seem hard to get?

Hi Conad, just looking in my 3m catalogue i've got a few bags of the 3m two part sprayable sealer in the garage which I don't need
the part number is 08823, your welcome to them if they would help you out, it's paintable in 30 mins, applied by a gun which I have
which your welcome to borrow. There's a show at demon tweeks on Sat if you want I'll bring it with me if you can pick up.

I've found loads of it, but its not paintable, and in an ideal world i'd like to paint over it.

keith, were you born with a halo over your head lol is that the 2k stuff in aluminium bags 250ml iirc... around £20 a bag? been told i'd need around 15 bags to do the whole underside of a nova  I know I sound like a cheapskate but I might have to start saving if im going down this route then (off work with an injury so money's tight). also, is the gun you have the type with changeable plastic nozzles? do i need to primer the metal first or does this go straight on, as i cant get the underside completely spotless and will need to seal over some existing sealer. does this double as 'stone chip' in the arches?

sorry to bombard you with questions but I need to make sure im doing things right.

use stone-chip if you're painting over the top.

conad
08-05-13, 12:17 PM
Just in the arches? so it would be.... 1-sealer 2-stonechip 3-primer 4-paint?

I've just noticed the 3M site claim 'Can be used for restoring stonechip coatings'.... does that not mean it replaces the need for stonechip?

this sh!t is soooo confusing!

managed to find the 250ml bags for £16.... please tell me I wont need anywhere near the 15 bags I've been told!

Ask Benn, he done the whole underside with 3M then painted over

The bags he had looked loads bigger than 250ml

Benn did comment on my 'project thread' tbf, but then didn't get back to me with the pictures.... hopefully he'll notice this thread :d.... I don't want to blag

the brother did his mark 1 golf and his g40 polo with u-pol gravitex .he first took off all the old seal to bear metal, primed it sprayed on the gravitex then painted over with 2pack paint

I'm sure the part number of mine was 3M 08878, it dried rubbery and hard and overpaintable, although that code might be for the white one it might help you reference it to find the black one they do

Pic of it applied before I painted it:

No doubt that 3M sprayable sealer is the best, but U-Pol Gravitex is great stuff, and cheap in comparison.

I got 6 litres of it for about 50 quid iirc.

U-Pol Raptor-X truck bed liner is meant to be the tits, too. Hard to get over here though.

conad

£50 for 6 litres... I don't like to get 2nd best usually, but when the 3M stuff is around £100 for 1.5 litres then common sense needs to be applied, I just can't justify spending that much. I suppose that's why I've been fretting so much about this. Cheers for your input mate.

So this gravitex stuff is underseal... Stone chip... it's Paintable.... And it's cheap? Almost seems to good to be true lol

Google it mate. It comes with a decent reputation. I was in the same boat, before I opted for it. The 3M stuff would be great, but as you say, common sense has to come into it too!

It's basically able to acheive the OEM style 'orange peel' finish, depending on how it is applied. Overpaintable and rubberised, as you say.

Cheaper than I thought: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/U-pol-GRAVITEX-Stone-Chip-Protector-Choice-of-Colours-1L-UPOL-x-6-/280793669531?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item41609b5f9b
LOL EBAY LINK
You need the gun too, or it can be brushed on, but doesn't go as far.

If in any doubt, consider the manufacturer. They may not be 3M (who give me ultimate confidence in everything that carries their name), but the brand 'U-Pol' also makes great products.

That, along with the many online success stories was enough to convince me.

A tough choice to make though, I grant you! lol

Part 08878 was correct, no idea why it comes up as lube on the searches but here it is: http://catalogue.3m.co.uk/en_gb/gb-aad/Coatings/Anti-Chip/Body_Gard~Textured_Coating~nocode

I'm sure it was about a tenner a tub when I did it, and needed a couple.

L14MNP...... you sir, are an absolute legend!!! I did google it as soon as you suggested it, and it seems all the American jeep fans swear by it, labelling it a 'brilliant british product' lol. I would throw a bit of rep your way but it wont let me, so here's a beer instead

im defo going down the spraying route as I want to get into every crevis I can.
