View Full Version : 20XE will start but won't idle or run

Got my XE running today, well kind of. It won't actually idle or run, if I try and rev it up it goes from nothing and revs right up really quickly with a small turn on the throttle body butterfly. Like all or nothing.

It has no exhaust fitted (just manifold), no sfi box (AFM plugged in though).

If I wiggle the wire going into the crank sensor then it will idle for a few seconds but hunting all over the place so I know I need a new sensor but as the car sparks and pumps fuel the sensor is working to a point.

Idle control valve?

It is an early dizzy xe with no lambda

Also check the throttle position sensor on the throttle body itself, just unplug it and start the car. As it has no lambda, is it running the correct ECU? Not that it will cause a lack of idling, but it won't run great unless PIN20 (I think from memory) is earthed.

Cheers will try the throttle position sensor.

It is an early astra gte engine, loom, ecu and manifold so it isn't supposed to have a lambda. FP ecu I think? Will check pin 20 tomorrow though for ground.

Got a known good crank sensor for tomorrow too

FP sound right, Ive got an early none lambda loom and ECU here which is FP, also :

Pretty sure I have the right engine/loom/ecu. Reckon crank sensor is the problem

WTF! clearly you have issues with your crank sender. stop looking for problems hen you know you have some somewhere else

Agree

However it works as it is needed to switch the fuel relay. Didn't want to wait for a new sensor to arrive to find another issue and wait for another part

It has no sfi box (AFM plugged in though).

So basically, the throttle body is sucking in air, which the afm isnt measuring, so the ecu has no clue as to whats going on, and youre wondering why it wont run?

Bang an sfi/ecobox on there, get the afm connected to it properly, and you will almost certainly find it runs fine!

I have an SFI box if you need one... But check you have enough clearance first. :)

No sfi box (got one but no bolts). Clearance is just about ok on bonnet.

It is running now, but idling high. New dizzy cap and plug the hole for brake servo feed from inlet manifold (bias box and forgot to plug the hole) got it sorted.

Are the bolts available from vauxhall still? Anyone know the part number?

friend of mine had the same symptoms on an xe he fitted that had been stored aside for a little while. it was the fuel pressure regulator on his.

buy my powercap lol. Without the pipe coming from the ICV to the sfi or the powercap being connected it will not start up.

check the throttle body adjustment. Was doing my head in when it was idling high! Turned out it was the throttle body adjustment screw lol.
