i'm looking at building up 2 wheels using 24" rims & some wheelchair hubs. they are 36 spokes each, i need to sort out either a supply of the right spokes, or if a decent price is agreeable, paying to get them built...

thanks for looking

chain reaction cycles for the spokes, i run 24inch on my dirt jump bike

building a good strong wheel is an art imo and the only thing i dont do on my own bikes despite having all the tools to do so.

i would guess that you've never built a wheel before so probably dont have wheel stand, spoke keys or a dishing stick?

personally i would get somebody to build them for you, a local wheelbuilder will probably be able to do you a good deal and they should retrue/tension them after a few months after the spokes stretch. a lot of the money will be in the spokes and they will be able to do them cheaper in my experience.

try and find a dedicated wheelbuilder aswell, not just any old bikeshop

if i tell you that its for the front axle of a downhill racing wheelie bin, would that sway your opinion of tension & dishing sticks etc?... lol

another option that could keep costs down, is to ask if you can spoke the wheel then bring it in for it to be properly built. my wheelbuilder was keen for me to do this as it it saves a lot of time for him

tension would still matter on any wheel if you dont want it buckling or flatspotting but dishing is proabbly not important lol

if youve built a wheel before go for it. i cant remember how you work out spoke lengths right now as from the sounds of it, youve never had the wheel built to copy the length of the old spokes. its not particularly difficult to do, but you will need to be patient to do it. you should be able to make a home made stand to true it on quite easily.

id imnagine tehres tutorials online and videos etc aswell that might help you :)

i bored myself rigid last night looking at online tutorials & spoke calculators & the massive rows over cut or rolled spoke threads!!! makes the big/small block tiffs on here look a bit tame lol lol

i can't use the old spokes, as the wheelchair rims are non-std(and one is scrap), and the hubs are larger diameter than the donor bike ones.

my plan is to reuse the rims after the racing for a bike trailer, so i want to get them somewhere near right..

i just had a thought & might contact the local cycle club to see who they use.

Give it a go, I've built a few wheels and its a great feeling when you roll on them for the first time knowing youve built something that a lot of people shy away from.

Get the critical dimentions of the rim(ERD, offset rim bed etc) and the hub (flange offset left and right and height)
There's plenty of online calculaters to tell you spoke length with just those and once you know the size pop to halfords and ask, they should have them on the shelf and if not they can get them in a day or two.

Then just watch YouTube to get an idea and crack on :)

/\ cool. our local halfords actually has a really good bike section.. the car section is shocking, but meh.

joshy

That's halfords lol. The car guys get paid more than the bike guys as well, go figure

Dont use halfords to build your wheels..

Any reason why?

You can't tar all halfords with the same brush because of hearsay or a bad expeirence at one store?

The bike folks vary so so so very much from store to store

I'd get a list of bike shops from yell and goto the one without a website. They tend to be the 'best' for the bespoke (groan) work you want.

i wouldnt use halfords for spokes either. although for a wheelie bin im not sure it would matter. wheel builder would sell them cheaper though i'd think

joshy

Halfords only stock dt swiss champion and butted competion spokes with dt swiss brass nipples. And all dt swiss spokes are forged with rolled threads.

Also halfords will not cut and roll new threads on spokes unlike some independents as dt swiss strongly advise against this.

I run my bikehut as well as any independent I've been to, and I like to think better than most....

Do you know if any of the 2013 boardman xc bikes will come in 29" format?

Do you know if any of the 2013 boardman xc bikes will come in 29" format?

The current 11' range has a 29"er.

The comp 29 is 749.99 with suntour epicon and avid/sram shifting and brakes.

The 14' range will have 2 29"er models with the comp being joined by the pro with a rockshox Reba most likely with again a sram setup. None of the Boardman bikes will be 26" for 2014 with all the other models becoming 650b.

New range will be released sometime around august.

Any questions, feel free to pm me mate.

Stuart
25-04-13, 10:25 PM
Hmm August is too late lol.
650b, that's a novel approach to take given the way the world has split in 26 and 29.

joshy
25-04-13, 10:32 PM
Yer. The industry is starting to release more 650b specific products but reading between the lines its just a way for companies to shift more product now everyone's bought into the 29er world haha.

Ill be sticking to 26 for the next few years I think.

Back on topic in 3.....2.....1..... Lol

I've got to ask as nobody else has... A downhill wheelie bin?? Wtf??

Have you thought about 'superstar components' I bought a top bollox set of wheels off them at a reasonable price. I know they do custom spokes.

First half the battle of building wheels is spoke size, once that's right building the wheel is easy.spoke tension and dishing follow suit. Look at with sapime spokes think that's how it spelt or dt Swiss, both have wheel calculator on site which will give you spoke length , not one to teach to suck egg but bike wheel the rim sits centre of the hub. If you need the hub to be off centre of the rim this would be a challenge but not impossible. Example rear bike wheel the drive side spoke is 2mm shorter than non drive on most hub, hope not included. So you could use this as a rough guild to work out the dish you need. I would be up for building the wheels for you if you want should be fun and I find it relaxing. Pm me or email me if you want me to build them up or if you have other questions. I have build at least 5sets of wheel for fat bike riding now and there all good .... So far

29er bikes suck utter a$$

Don't bother

Bike manufactures ran out of money making ideas and started changing wheel size

If it ain't broke...........

I've got to ask as nobody else has... A downhill wheelie bin?? Wtf??

our local town has an annual downhill gokart race. there are a couple of locals who have really serious expensive karts. then the rest of us just have some fun.. iclose a wheeled bin for the 1st time i entered it simply cos when i was 17, i worked in a fast food outlet at the bottom of the hill they use, and one night, a very pissed lad came hurtling past in a wheeled bin & i have to say, it looked a right laff. so i converted our garden waste bin in 2 hrs into a racer that met the regs & off we went i was in the adult class, my daughter in the junior one). its a time trial format, so one at a time down the hill... so when we went down, we got massive cheers & a lot of laughter.. raised a few bob for charity too

when is the race and what charity do they raise for?

I would be interested in coming and watching it and sponsoring or putting a few quid in the pot

mowgli
26-04-13, 11:20 PM
tj, google hinckley BID soapbox race, its all there. people raise for all sorts of charities... local & national...

john, i need wheels that mount from 1 side only, so i can make a steering axle that is halfway decent looking, and i tried trolley wheels the last time & they were crap

conad. its a family event & starts at about 9am, so stone cold sober is the order of the day.

for any of you lot who don't remember billing 2 years back.. i turned up at 4pm on the sunday, having competed in the race, packed up, took the gear home, then returned the van i'd borrowed & then finally drove down to northampton at great speed.... lol

all of the ones ive been to have been useless. i once had to stand waiting for half an hour to speak to the car stereo system "specialist" when i wanted a head unit for my mk1, who never actually turned up so i walked out, i take it you work there if your getting so defensive?

interesting. if at all possible, i'm planning to fit braking to the 2 front wheels. & i think they will need a fair camber on them too. the main issue i will have is trying to get any form of self centering, so the wheel(handlebar) doesn't get grabbed out of the pilots hands.

sorry mate, dont mean to jab out.

I do work at the dorking branch on the bike side of things and I know for a fact that my store is a great store. Just gets my back up when we get tared with the same brush as all the others (I know that most stores are pretty **** when it comes to cars or bikes haha)

99% of our work is top notch 1st time round.
And the other 1% (we all make mistakes) we make right by the customer everytime

our local halfords bike section is actually pretty good. some of the local bike shops could really take some lessons in customer service.
