View Full Version : Drill extensions

I need to use a normal hole saw to cut a drainage hole into the plastic soil stack. Problem is, there is a skin of brick, insulation and cinder block posing as a barrier. I have used a 5" dry core drill to gain access but the hss hole saw obviously wont reach the stack.

Is there an easy/off the shelf way to extend a 13mm chuck or an sds drill to get a few hindered mm in? I did think about using a core drill extension in the hole saw but alas the threads are different :(

i had a normal chuch that fitted into a sds drill so it would of been 3-4 inch longer but i dont knkw what happenes to it

4" wouldn't be enough really :(

What about a hss to normal chuck adaptor

has the hole saw got a hex shank?

if it has, just find a socket that fits it and add 1/2" extension bars to get the right length and cut the hole with a speed-brace. Its just a plastic pipe after all.

Yes it's hex and I had thought of that, mainly using 3/8" to get it in the chuck of a drill with ease

that's uncanny how we thought of that exact same thing! im sure we are the same person!

file a bolt until it has a square head, then put the sq head in the 3/8th extension and run the shank in the drill. that is one solution quick and simple solution....but there are many many many more which we could both think of at the same time.

stu, please explain your problem again. usually you drill the pilot hole thru, then go in from the outside to save the brick faces, knock the brick out of the core drill, you'd be amazed how many get returned to hire shops cos they are faulty but still have a lump of brick inside them(source jason from jb tool hire, hinckley) then go round the other side & drill thru from the inside.

you'll need to remove the soil stack to make the connection anyway.

if your drill has a handgrip on the front, remove it & hang on to it like a 14year old on his cock

I've done the core drilling bit... Took ages but was easy (and woah **** me, you arent the only one who can drive a core drill :p ).
I now need to connect drainage to the soil stack through the hole that exists.... problem is the hole is so sodding deep that a normal has hole saw wont reach.
There is no need to remove the soil stack as its either getting a strap on or one of those compression kits fitted.

sorry stu, i was trying to get my head round what you were up to & thought you were still having core drill trouble.

all soil stacks have moveable joints. why not simply turn the pipe round, drill it, fit a connection & turn it back? you might need to loosen a couple of the wall brackets, but it will turn.

std practice is for plumbers to fit the connection to the side of the stack & elbow it into the wall, so any leaks can be sorted outside of the cavity.

Stuart in your situation i think you need a strap-on.

Stuart

Id love a strapon.

there is no room to add an elbow.

is the soil stack inside or out? if out, you could just dismantle it, drill it & refit it. if inside, then it will be a ballache.

you can get flat drill bits for wood that usually will drill plastic if done slowly, and you can definitely get extensions for them

Stuart

Its inside. Not a huge ballache, just need to extend the hole saw some how... think the socket and 3/8" extensions will be the best bet. Just need to make sure the mrs is out when I do the work as she will undoubtably go and use the toilet while I work on the stack lol

Any bodging techniques I could have offered have been pushed out of my mind with unpure thoughts now. :(

I burst out laughing in the plum centre queue once when the guy asked for a 110 strap on and a manhole

they must spell 'plumb center' differently in the north.

tbf, a lot of the rudest sayings appear to have been coined by plumbers

not yet he isn't... the act of union means that scotland ceased to exist as a sovereign nation in 1707, the same time as england ceased to exist as a nation....we have been great britain since then..... its only cos of sporting federations & alex salmond that they think we are 2 separate nations....

just the english don't bang on about it all the sodding time.......

Did you get your poo-pipe drilled in the end or did you get some one with a large extension to do it for you?
