very nice slippy, definately one of the better examples! i had been planning a similar idea for my bulkhead, albeit for a slightly different reason, your pics have just convinced me! like the chassis skids too, bit cheaper and harder wearing than kevlar guards!

I am prone to leaving the road so anything that helps me rejoin is a bonus plus we intend to do some gravel events once she has a few battle scars so we have half an eye on that also.

The AVO chaps will give you some pointers re the bulk head there are a few things to consider

On google chrome at least, open up the actual picture, right click, copy imagine link, and repaste into a post with image tags as per any other photo hosting site.

im going pretty well all out on my shell, you might have seen it on mig with the big extended wheel tubs etc so i'll be ok with a few alterations to suit. are you using floor mounted pedals? ive heard bad stories about them so i plan to fit an inboard bias box, above the pedals in a similar style to mk2 escort bias box, having seen one in a nova rally car i know it can be done with a degree of success. only other main consideration would be the steering rack but i would just make a box, somewhere between a standard mount and what you have. also planning my own wide track arms and wide track IRS too. shell looks magic, loving the centre console too. keep us updated as it progresses please :)

Slippy

Thanks mate will do

Just need to finalise the door bars and complete all the pre paint stuff like deciding whats going where and how it will be mounted etc then it's blasting time :)

the current build starts at 24, i built the car and basically taught myself as i went, as you can tell if you read from the start. i rallied it in 2010 then sold it to build a very nice corsa, then bought it back again for the challenge of widetracking it and doing alot of fabrication. altho what you see in that thread will all be re-done, those tubs are getting chopped out and done differently, ive thought of a better method in the past few months.

We had an entry in 2012 for the old car but pre event spanner checks revealed some big tears on around the gear box mount and front mounts so we took the decision to start again

Where still plodding away mate well be updating soon I promise, lots of little details which probably don't look like much but have been time consuming.

Soon be paint time then it will be exciting times :)

The Devil is in the details!!!!Mate if you get a chance then defo update the thread. Ive been checking this almost daily hoping to see some new stuff. ITs pretty much the build i would have loved to do if i could get a big enough loan!!!

Slippy
11-10-13, 10:58 AM
Don't worry mate there are updates to come

Depending on how handy you are I'd recommend getting it built for you if budget allows, having the premises, right equipment and know how means you get a quality product. Plus it will be done in about a quarter of the time lol

Think there a few update pics on the builders site Swan AVO https://www.facebook.com/pages/Swan-AVO/192928674123607

Have a chat with Paul from AVO they are pretty fecking reasonable considering the workmanship and attention to detail, worse case a phased build could be an option

Awesome stuff. My budget doesnt allow for anything other than parts tbh so im doing all the work myself. I used to be a welder/fabricator so im pretty comfortable with that side of things. For anything involving folding/pressing etc there is a fab shop near my house that seems to be pretty friendly although they havent done any work for me yet.

I was wondering about the gearbox tunnel that hey cut out and replaced with a new piece of sheet metal. Do you happen to know what thickness they used?

I am looking to reinfoce my tunnel also but dont fancy the amount of work involed in bending and fitting a new channel.

Slippy
17-10-13, 12:07 AM
Few more added Tom,

Not sure on thickness tbh possibly 1.5mm but I'm sure Paul will help you out on that score if you contact him via FB, we didn't fancy attaching seat rails to the standard tunnel as it's approx 0.6 - 0.8mm and in our opinion not substantial enough in a crash/roll.

also, seeing how far up you've fitted the unions for your heater makes me wonder, im quite sure your man knows what hes up to but are they maybe a bit high? both in terms of not wanting to have them higher than the header tank and also in terms of access to them later, as ive had to get into some just last week and they were behind lots of wiring etc and it was just a nightmare. take care when piping the heater too, if youre using the common type the fittings aren't great, they could do with being longer to make it easier for a jubilee to grip, and ive seen one come off in the past.

Slippy
17-10-13, 06:17 PM
Thanks Kenny, we are running a micro heater http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/cockpit-ventilation/demon-tweeks-lightweight-heater to save weight as the standard ones, as you know are uneccesarily large and unsightly

It will be ducted to the screen and side windows, I experienced a misted screen during an event up on Otterburn and it's scary ****......

that's the kind im talking about, take care when piping it up, its not fun when the nav is reading notes with his feet on the dash and the footwells are full of water haha. ive been looking for better fittings to use with mine but not seen any yet.

not trying to pick fault, the car is lovely and very clever in places :)
