Hi, Not a new member, But decided to delete my old username and start another.
In the middle of building a Road Rally car (Will get a thread up soon)
Running a 1.4 8v out of what I believe to be an Astra Mk1
Kent vernier and NVO52 Cam.
Was just wondering whats the best spec (Cheap-ish) carb setup to run.
Bearing in mind that I'm only allowed twin choke and no twin's for R/R
Cheers,
Dion!

Nova SR Pierburg 2E3 or a Weber twin choke replacement. Both unfortunately are getting quite popular amongst the grass trackers and so have shot up in price.
A rolling road I went to years ago said a Sierra twin choke Pierburg(I think from a 1.8) would be as good as twin carbs on a tuned small block. Never tried it though.
there was a thread about this we week or so ago. They were going to run a Weber DGAS of the ford 3L capri. Personally if I was going to do this seriously I would go for a twin SU set up on a custom built manifold. Its the tarmac oval lads that use the pierburgs, and not many use the weber convesion carb in autograss.

I have also been thinking of just chucking on a standard SR carb but as said, Getting hard to get hold of now!
This is on ebay at the moment and fairly local, Looks a bit far from the head for the carb to be situated but what do you think?

Dion!
That has to go through a 32mm restrictor so defeating the objext of having a 40 on the end, they also ice up on just 4 laps of an autograss hence the copper pipe wrapped round it. Your easiest route would be to use a 1300 MK1 astra inlet and bolt a plate to it then fit a suitable downdraught carb to the plate eg drla dellorto (might be a tight fit).

Excuse my ignorance but how does it work with the copper pipe they run hot water round that?

Was thinking the same Gary. I've already got an Astra mk1 Inlet with the plate bolted on running a Volkswages early Weber 32/34 on there, Was just looking for something a little better. I was wondering what the copper pipe running around was..

as the fuel\air narrows down to the 32 mm restrictor it gets colder, to a point that moisture from the air freezes. If you dont run the copper pipe with warm coolant going through it the engine stops.
32\34 good for about 125HP apparently

Thanks for the reply Gary.
I'm not really hoping for more than 110bhp anyway, So that shouldnt be a problem. Engine going in a road rally car, Power is not everything down the lanes..
thanks,
Dion!
if you can find an astra mk1 manifold with a gm varajet carb, it would be pretty good. they used them on 2.0L engines back in the day & the chokes were pretty massive
