As the 5 series is costing me a ba$tard fortune in petrol every week, I have been thinking of getting a cheap diesel for going to and from work in.
What are cav diesels like to live with? Reliable? Easy to work on? How many mpgs should i expect? Are they capable of big miles if looked after? Any experience or opinions would be good. :thumb:
Cavalier Isuzu diesels are great yokes. Only problem you have is finding one. When you do the things fetch a premium over here just like any other old school vauxhall. Good luck stevie.

Aye I know they do mate. Just wondering if it is worth the effort really.
Great cars, especially in white with GSi kits and new alternators.
Cough buy mine cough lol
buy an m12x125 bolt, with 2 nuts & 2 washers... drill a hole in the floor directly under the accelerator pedal & fit the bolt as a governor. you will simply not be able to push the pedal down as far, thus saving a fortune in fuel job jobbed....lol
Cav izuzu td's are ace, i miss my old one, was running 110bhp @ 20psi iirc, theyre bombproof lumps and there was a local cav mk3 taxi with over 300,000 on the clock, it was only scrapped because the driver was an alky and on one return trip from the pub he parked it in the back of the car that wasnt usually parked in the space outside his house lol
Engine still ran :thumb:

This is what I wanted to hear.... Not that I would want to buy one with a million miles on it!

That will be your main problem with one now, finding one with decent miles! And any over here that have "low" miles are clocked!!

Are parts these days ready available off the shelf still or are they Nova bound?

Yeah I know. I will probably end up with a 406 or something like that, but i would prefer a Cav simply because i would have at least a bit of interest in it!
I haven't had any problems at all buying parts for mine, a quick scan of ebay shows more panels and whatnot for cavs than Novas and at decent prices.

I bought it as I needed a commuter wagon for work, where my job move to Bristol I was expecting to do ~30k a year. As it turned out though I relocated closer to work so instead of 30k a year I did more like 6 :tard:
I've still got the Nova as well so three cars (4 if you include the CZT) is a bit excessive :d I've got no requirement for an ecobarge any more so I want to use the NCB from the cav to put the Nova back on the road. I'd love to keep the cav but I would rather keep the Nova (anyone who quotes that gets banned lol)

op, if you are planning to get a 406, please buy something else, like a mondeo or even a vectra
pug stuff goes well right until it breaks down, then god help you.

lol mowgli. I know French shlte is shlte but diesel 406's do seem to go on forever, I don't know, there doesn't seem to be much about ATM , but I am not in a hurry to get something.
Baxters 406 did 100mpg.......
On more truthful stories, cavs are good but rust is the main worry.
Td's are brilliant,i wish id never spent 6grand on my mk5 astra 1.3cdti an just kept me £300 cav td...........

I missed a cav td on gumtree yesterday which looked quite clean :(. I don't see much point in buying a dear diesel tbh, my current thinking is, cheap and cheerful as possible for work and it can get dirty/scratched/dented etc and it doesnt matter. Then toys for fun.
