i claimed a couple of years back, iirc you can only claim back upto 10 years, and you need receipts.unless you have bought everything from snap-on you can just get an acount history from your dealer.
well worth doing if you have spent a small fortune.you can do it yourself but there are companys that can do it for you but they charge a percentage

ive only been mechanic for 2 years and spent around £1500 with the snap on man and wanted one of these

and if i claim my vat back on previous tools i can put at least a 3rd on the price deposit down or even more.
im still looking on net, is there some form somewhere on like the hm revue and customs website i can print off and fill out atall

To find out how you can get tax relief for tools or specialist clothing and the time limits for getting it, read the guide 'How to get allowances and reliefs - employees or directors' by following the link below.
Before you contact HMRC you’ll need to have all the following information to hand:
name and address of your employer
what expenses you are claiming for, for example the costs of laundering your uniform
the industry you work in
your occupation or job title
details of any laundry or cleaning services provided by your employer
details of payment or vouchers provided by your employer to cover laundry or other costs

be careful, hmrc are sneaky heurs, this a good way to see what your spending your money on, if they see you buying to much they will check your paying enough tax, mate was on the snap on lorry and a company who were agents helping hmrc claim back tax on tools, got him to fill in the form and snap provided the list of tools bought in the past year, he got a letter from hmrc with a form for him to fill in, he got shafted , owed them money in the end up,

doesnt matter how much you give hime a week, its the total spend they would be interested in.i claimed back for 7 years and only got back for 4..wasnt complaining though, got near a grand back !!lol depends how much you claim back on though.sometimes its not worth it.i knew mine would be a fair amount thats why i did it.

I found the forms the other week, looking at doing it myself. I'll look it up again tomorrow. Oh, and the electric guns are EPIC!
the form is P87

You will only get the tax back if you paid the tax in the first place !
Claim on the VAT inclusive price
You cannot claim the VAT back unless you are trading (ie self employed) and VAT registered

This ^
Suprised it took 2 whole pages to be honest. Claiming VAT back is completely different to claiming expenses against income.
all people in recognised 'professions' can claim a certain amount of legitimate expenses back. there is an allowance figure. my mrs used to claim for tights when her nurses uniform rules dictated she must wear them. she got about £100 a year.. they now wear trousers.
