A friend of mine used to have one with a G60 motor in, went really well for something he cobbled together in his nans garage. Other then that it was just like a Nova... old & shonky lol

Common problems are, clutch cable pulls through bulkhead, a plate is stuck over the bulkhead and cures that. Steering components free/seize up with smeg or cold and pull the steering rack mount off the bulkhead, mines been welded back on. The air metering unit plays up on the 1.8i Kjet engine and makes it tricky to start hot.(depends if injection or not)

Body wise they are really strong shells, as proved an number of times.

No power steering and the gear linkage is a bit prehistoric.

Other than that mines a 1989 with 136k and they are bloody reliable, can't chuck the cabrio around due to all the steel that been added, but the hatch is a fantastic gti.

Edit: rust under body kit on the rear arches.

ive not had a mk1 but ive had a couple of mk2's with 2.0 16v motors on twin 40's and mine was felt just as quick as a xe nova, but you do need a deep wallet to own one for the likes of seats and pannels as the scene tax is stupid. the 1.6 gti is the rarer of the models and they do big money in oe spec

Fantastic car, drove my 82 tintop daily for 7 years but just recently took it off the road for a full resto as I drove it into the ground, Like any old car now they are total money pits. Are you looking at buying one?
