"Running on"

Does any1 know what causes cars to "run on"? Basically, i'll turn off the engine, then it coughs, then it revs, then it stops (1992 1.4 SR if that makes any difference). the first couple of times my old man reckoned it was shit petrol but its been happening for the last month :(

alright mate im no expert but i think that mite have something to do with your timing out?!! hope this helps

Normally it's down to the timing being too far advanced, get it checked and adjust accordingly if it's out.

might need to clean your carb also?

usually even on a finely tuned engine. just bcause of the pure heat of the engine, and unburnt fuel and air left in the carbs and dirty jets, sometimes the heat detonates the residues.
