pulleed up the handbrake in my mk1 nova other day and it went all the way up and felt like it snapped, now doesnt work...
looked under the rear of the car and it looks all fine by the rear beam so where would it have snapped? right by the lever?

probably above the axle or around the rear plastic quadrants.

well pull both parts from under the car and see what part ends up in your hand.

There's a S clip under the lever that may have snapped

If nothings hanging loose might be something more serious inside the drums. Do the rear brakes still work?

You're going to need to jack it up and have a good look underneath. Support the car very firmly. The handbrake essentially is in 3 sections, as was said an S yoke with a cable on with a ball on the end this is about a foot back from the lever under the car in the tunnel. This attaches to the long cable which goes to either near side or off side depending on your model and then attaches to the other yoke a top the middle of your rear beam. It's easy to see what's going on from there.

something is wrong with the brakes or the cables, you will have to keep looking at the above listed suggestions until you find the problem.

If it definitely ain't the cable you maybe have a problem with the return spring inside the drum. Let me know as keen to learn.
