My wife has a mk4 Astra sxi1.8 the car ran dry of water now won't run I have put water in and car starts but the excellarator does not move the car engine managment light is on and the car ticks over but really lumpy the revs go up and down on there own can anyone help

Where has the water gone? Did it overheat?

I think there is a small hole in the header tank or a split pipe no it did not overheat

If there was no water in it the car would overheat and the gauge would read cold.

Are you sure it hasn't overheated?

I don't think so but I don't drive it she dose what's the worst if it has overheated

Engine write off.

If you are lucky you'll get away with a head gasket replacement.

Possible that you require a new cylinder head.

It is also possible that that the fault is completely un related to having no water. But it's not likely

You need to do a compression test to be sure. A compression gauge can be purchased for 25 quid.
