Well as some of you know my new project is all about standard grandad spec and sleeper.

This is how the interior now looks after I removed the SRi interior, changed the dash, steering wheel, gear knob, radio etc. I wanted a old medium wave radio, sourced this one from a local autojumble. Looks the part I think..

Any way obviously I still want to listen to FM radio etc so I decided to mount a CD player in the glove box.

Here is how I did it.

Take one glove box...

Make a template..

I used 19mm MDF as I had some..

Covered in the thin Carpet found under the back seat of a Nova.. matched the rest plus its thin and easy to work with. Used spray adhesive and tacks to hold into place...

Fitted.. used a couple of screws to mount it.

I then set about cutting the back out as the radio would of fowled the back of the glove box. I marked where I wanted to cut then cut it with a 1mm cutting disc on a grinder. Used some 180grit paper to clean up the edges...

And radio fitted...

Tidy job. I always do the same in my old cars, but I partition it so the rest of the glovebox is still useable.

Your way is a lot neater though. Reminds me of my mates old IASCA competition car (wasn't the HU in there, but you know what I mean)

I am wanting to do the same dont want to cut up my glovebox:confused:. What wires are for connecting a new style stereo to the nova loom? There is only three to power it (am I right?) Live constant live and earth? What colours is what?

Looks good but i wouldve just cut a slot into the back of the glovebox, rather than take the whole top off lol

Joff has a similar setup in his, but he went one step further and in typical Joff epic cool style, he removed the whole front of the H/U, then made a wiring loom to run between the H/U and the front/faceplate, and mounted the front behind the flick up panel on his SRi sunvisors, then ran the loom down a pillar and back to the H/U in the glovebox, how fecking cool is that :d

Only ever seen that done twice, once on Joffs, and once on a mates old cav GSi :thumb:

I did mine at the weekend as well, still wanted use of the glovebox so its pretty intact & the stereo is held with really strong double sided tape...surprisingly solid it is too.so i now have the original look but ipod connection,i just dont know where to put the cable? Any suggestions? lol i'm not leaving it dangling there :(

Can you make it come out the centre console?

Spudly
01-04-13, 07:10 PM
Aye lift your electric window switch housing up, run it through the back of the center console where the window switch wiring/plugs come through, then ream out a 4mm hole in one corner of the switch housing, sit the cable in there and clip back in, then you will have a flush fitting switch housing and a neat cable install, the iPhone or iPod will sit neatly (albeit upside down) in the front of the center console (or on its side) and be neatly plugged in and chargeable :thumb:

I wanted to avoid cutting the console but a small hole would be ok,cheers lads :thumb:

Its the way forward, stealth ice install :D .. Top job on the fabrication tbh :) might just consider this myself yet. I aquired a project with switch and button start. May just use stereo slot for switch panel or maybe inside glovebox.
Cheers for the ideas
