View Full Version : Corsa C total steering failure.
Hey folks,
The mrs just called me there on her way back from the shops with the wee one.
Her steering had went as she was about to pull out at a junction. I'm glad it didn't go while she was on the motorway etc as the steering wheel just spins as if it's not even attached to the rack:confused:
I had a look under the steering wheel and everything seems to be linked together although the lower bit below the joint bit seems a bit close to the floor.
I think the rack it's self is ok as I used a large crow bar to manipulate the wheels to turn the car to park it up and both wheels turned fine.
Has anyone else had or heard of this happening before?
Thanks,
David.
Similar supposedly happened to a mates brothers Trafic.
He reckons it was solved by tightening the nut which attaches the wheel to the column.
I am very dubious tbh, but worth a look mate?
Aye. Whip the airbag out and have a look?
Leave it connected if you're concerned about discharge (fnar fnar).
Steering UJ has probably sheared the bolt. There only a teeny tiny M8 bolt that connects the coloumn to the rack.

See, that sounds more like it.
My mate swears this is how the Trafic was 'repaired' though. lol
Scrap it,
And gimme the wheels :-D
Buy a Ford. :d
(I like some Corsa C's)
Hahaha nice try bazil, but after I used the bar to turn the wheels I don't think you would be interested lol.
I will take the airbag out later and have a look, then check the bolt under the car.
Must be an SRi if he's sniffing about after your wheels? lol
Lmao mate, it's as sh*t as they come mate.
Keyed down both sides, sanded down paintwork and bogin lol
I only need 2 mate fur ma supercorsacombo to get shot of the wheeltrims lol

The UJ bolts are just above the pedals inside the car. Its a male torx. There shiote qaulity bolts. I snapped the head off one refitting a coloumn into a Corsa B once.
As for Corsa C, buy my SRi CDTi lol 42mpg, group 9 insurance, 100hp & 140 odd torques lol

Cheers mate.
It is scary when you think what could of happened, if it had been 5 mins earlier she was on the motorway and god knows what could of happened.
Just had the car picked up by a good friend in his recovery truck there and he thinks it's the universal joint so he is going to check it over in the morning for me:)
Thank god for friends like that.

it might be the universal joint on the steering column.
Thanks mate, fingers crossed it's a cheap fix lol

How much have you spun the steering wheel round? Might have Knackered the spiral connector for te airbag if its too far
^ Good shout! Clock springs don't like that.

Corsa C airbag squibs are ten a penny on eBay anyway.
Everything for a Corsa is lol.
That's not the point though. It's the inconvenience it causes.
Thanks for everyones help and advice, the car is getting dropped off later with a new steering rack fitted:)

Happened to me in my sisters first car (thank god I was driving and not her). 70mph in outside lane of a1. Safe to say I s**t myself. Lucky didnt hit anything and managed to get it half off road. Bolt sheered in rack, aa guy put bolt in it to get me home but had to get a new bolt from vaux as its not just a regular bolt.
I was in the bed of my mates 1948 V8 Chevy Stepside when he took it for a burn around the industrial estate his unit is on - then the column to rack UJ came off.
We hit the kerb lol
I'm now sh!tting myself driving my Combo!
The steering rattles and shakes like I only have 1 bolt in each wheel lol
I just thought the wheels were out if balance :-/
You implying that I didn't balance your wheels rite mr bazil?
