Ssteered wheels forward of the steering wheel itself will increase turning circle.

Think Bedord Rascal, where your virtually sitting ontop of the front wheels, V's any estate car.

EDIT: On topic, seen loads of them, look the nuts IMO.

Looking at these at the minute to replace the 3 MAN's for low loader duties, demos are great some specon them! Super space cab is big!

http://gallery.xpowerforums.com/data/571/DSC_5003.jpgseen loads of these over time, there is also a red volvo long nose truck i see across the uk, but there old now, the merc is by far the best looking truck about!

mowgli

the merc is a looker, but they suffer from mostly being dealer only repairable these days & somewhat over complicated compared to the scandanavian products which still dominate the market....

tbh, most modern stuff is ugly as hell, so its nice to see something with a bit of design flair about it

Know all about it, we have a contract to clean up the waste from the laundering plants!! Gathering up a right fleet of scrap curtainsiders!

round here they just fill old box trailers with waste tyres etc, gas off the chassis no.s & dump them at night in a different council borough

Get that quite a bit too, although the trailers are usually just stolen, so chassis numbers still intact!

Made myself a decent cattle trailer for the tractor from one though, so can't complain!!

it's to fit the maximum length allowed on UK roads while maintaining a decent load space, same reason you never see them fitted with ducktail aero stuff like they do in america.

The flat front actually ruins the aero and there's been far better designs penned for Europe/USA but it would require law changes over here to be of any good as current max lengths would mean more trips per route and actually use more fuel than we do now.

the yanks only pull about 20t of goods, and have some pretty strange axle weight/spacing rules, and because of the distances, cab space for living has developed more over there.

All valid reasons. However, i always thought it was from a practical reason of pulling out at a 'T' junction, half the carriage way would be blocked by bonnet before the driver could even see left to right.

/\ tbh, where the road signs are placed makes it nigh on impossible to see in a cab over wagon.....

mostly the bonneted trucks aren't popular in britain due to needing a tight turning circle.. most factory yards were built small over here, and cos we won the battle of britain & the nazis stopped bombing us, we have loads of crappy tight places left(see railway bridges, canal bridges, road network & town centres) if we don't struggle to turn, we risk grounding out... the bonnet adds about a ton to the unladen weight too. as i said, the yanks pull lower weights so its not a problem, but over here weight is a massive issue

I'm sure there's a few reasons for the cab over engine configuration gaining popularity, but I have it on good authority (I.e various SAE papers and industry research) that there's been plenty of development in far more efficient designs that just aren't legal for UK roads while maintaining the same load space and it's the reason they were never adopted for use here.

MAN developed this fairly recently for EU use which is a bit of a 50/50 between bonneted/cab over to try and maximise load space while clawing back some MPG through aero:
http://emeraldtechnologypartners.com/wp-content/themes/striking/includes/timthumb.php?src=http://emeraldtechnologypartners.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/man-truck-2.jpg&h=371&w=640&zc=1

But it's still marginally over UK regulations because of the lowered back requiring it to be slightly longer to get an extra couple of pallets at the rear to make up the normal load spacing, and the duck tail going on at the back.

all uk trucks are pretty much made to eu c&u regs, except that we allow a max height of 16'(4.8m) whereas the euro boys run at
4.0m as a std height.

if they wanted super duper aero efficiency, the a central driving position with a few cameras to aid visibility would be pretty good,

making the rear end steer would be better for shunting, and i'd imagine creating a modular powertrain/transaxle so you could run it with more driven axles to would be more efficient.

the one thing i've never understood is why they aren't using moveable panels, so you could create an openable ducktail, or raise/lower the roof, and then the cab could be a right transformer to make the bed space work when its needed....

or even a stepped floor monocoque trailer for maximum load space...

all these ideas are doable with a great imagination, but the cold hard fact is this... you need space around the 5th wheel coupling for moving over undulating ground, you need to be able to pull more than one trailer & trailers have a life of about 30 years, you need to make trucks strong cos the work loading they do is incredible, then only 50% are motorway spec, you still need tippers, tankers, container wagons, concrete mixers, bin wagons etc..
