What's the budget, what's the expected use, will you get bored and go big block later down the line etc.

Default build for a 1600 on carbs IMHO is.
T40's
Kent ast2 cam (standard pulley)
Light port on the head (more if possible)
Ashley manifold and system.
1.4 coil, dizzy and amp

Setup by someone clever.
Use till you get bored.

I put a set of twin 40s on my 1600 sv track car and for the money I wish I could go back and just change the engine to 1800 or 2000. The 1600 engine starts and runs fine and does 105 bhp at the wheels with good mid range power. But it cost loads to build and set up on the rolling road. I would of seen much better power and mid range numbers going with a engine convertion. It would have been much cheaper in the long run. It sounds very nice at 7k revs in 3rd but lacks top end power. I have a 1800 twin cam and a F20 box sat in the garage waiting to go in the car and wish I had just done this in the first place.

Thanks a lot lads, so seems I should justbgo for the 2 litre conversion or leave it as it is, as by the sounds of it for the money it costs you don't get much more power?

20xe conversion 3-500, carbs alone + fitting upto 400 or so. 150bhp out the box or 120bhp or so with 1.6?

I got the carbs and covertion kit cheap at £255. then spent around £200 on a race dizzy and control unit. Then had it on the rollers to set it up at around £100. £50 on belts and bits and bobs to put it together so around £600. I paid £20 for a C18XE engine and got a gear box for free off a pal. I need a stand alone ecu to run the new set up and should be able to get a second hand mega sqert for around £300. The twin cam swap will cost around £600 but the power will go from 105bhp to around 150bhp. Mid range power will be miles better with the twin cam also. Like I said, looking at the true cost of carbs vs twin cam I should of just gone twin cam.
