View Full Version : tyre size...
what tyres do people use on 14inch alloys on a nova, so they dont hit the arch etc, they are for 6j 0z rally wheels...
On my RFX's with a 60mm drop I had 165/60 tyres fitted (standard of Ford KA's with 14" wheels). They never rubbed the front arches and also my speedo was 100% correct (tested with sat-nav and digidash) with this wheel/tyre combo.
I think they look great and don't have too much of a sidewall.
Here's a couple of pictures:

I have 185 60 14 tyres on my 6J x 14" RFX's on my SR, but was catching with a 40mm drop (Only just on the rh rear) so now run std ride height
Depends on several things:
>>>What your arches are like... Maybe, just maybe, they might be original! Even if original, they might be folded.
>>>What wheel offset and width you've got.
>>>How low it is.
...And assuming it's a 3 door.
I have a GTE road rally car - it looks a bit lower than standard, -20mm maybe?? Neither arch is original but I've tried to keep them in about the right place when putting repair panels in. Whilst trackdaying in it (ie hard cornering, pushing the tyres further out than they'd ever get in normal driving) I've found that several different types of 195/60x14s don't rub. That's on standard GM wheels, ie 49mm offset with 5.5" width.
Hope that helps...

ignore me lol
165/60/14 micra or ka tyres all the way for 6x14s mate. William novasportc550 ran them on his nova sport running 6x14 compomotive rims and they looked great.
the factory size on the gte was 175/60r14. 185/60's fit & i ran my old one with them & a 30mm drop.. i only got arch rubbing trouble with it 4 up & the boot full of hand tools.

Was this while running on Y wheels? 6 inch rims stretch the sidewalls slightly (not like euro look but you know what I mean) Gte's ran 175/65/14, I put 185/60/14 on standard tin rims on a standard car back when it was 4 or 5 years old with no mileage on it, and it rubbed on corners etc. I have ran novas on 6x14 mim rims with an et 49 offset with 175/65/14s and they rubbed on one side of the car only. I have ran 14 inch 16v astra and cavalier lx 5.5x14 with 185's and they rubbed. I have ran calibra 15's with 185/55/15's and they rubbed. This is only a guide as people have different experiences, I have found its very difficult to fit anything non genuine to a nova and get away with it. Even 5.5x13 group a revolutions with 185/60/13's bloody rub!!
I was going to change to 185x55x14, any one got any experience.

I wouldn't. 175/60/14 would be exactly the same height, rolling radius and circumference, but 10mm marrower in tread. Better option in my opinion. 106 rallye and quiksilver run 175/60/14 with 185/55/14 on the 106 gti.
I have used 185/60 R14 on my Td, and 185/55 on my loon, both low and both have no issues.
If I recall correctly, was there not a difference between mk1's and mk2 rear arches. William novasportc550 showed me something about this ages ago, I will probably get shot down for this comment but I thing mk2's had better clearance. How many novas have their original arches now anyway? Most have been replaced or modded now anyway so tyre size and fitment won't be an issue for most folk.

Loons have a completely different rear wheel arch so won't have contact issues.
Yes and my td hatch is running the bigger size with no issue, i have only had a issue with 195s

can someone sort this into a table for me this is all the original tyre sizes and pressures. it looks right as i write it but it comes out wrong in the preview

I have 175/50 on my 14's
nice edd, i wanted some of this size myself, but couldnt stretch the cash. prob the ideal size for clearance and a wee acceleration gain :)

I think ultimately the arch clearance and tyre size is dependant on the rear arch build of your shell, if original, or with arches rebuilt. Then there is your rim size width and offset, especially if going away from 49.
Unfortunately what is OK on one nova hatch, may not work on another, it will always be a game of chance.
With the 40mm drop on my SR the RH rear arch was just catching the lettering on the tyre when going over bumps/undulations.
the wheels i have are et49, so should i go with the 175/65/14 s ??
cheers Faker
Alex J looking at the table of original tyre size i have put up for you on a vauxhall offset of et49 175/65/14s should be fine as it's all original spec so long as its on a 5x14 wheel.
