Hello, i'm Breaknob let's say a trainee mechanic, i just bought a Nova a few weeks ago. First i thought that i just change the suspension so it runs smooth but then i thought it's a nice classic with a huge potential so i came up with a project. So it's going to have a full respray, carpet's, upholstery, seatcovers, changed. I want to paint the dashboard maybe the steering wheel aswell. Now it has mk2 front, i want to change that back to mk1. I'm going to leave the 1.2 engine in it only because of the insurance, slap some billstein suspension on it and some nice classic alloys or maybe steelies. I have the design in my head colours and everything i just need the time and money for it. I'm at the stripping stage now as you can see. I keep the thread updated as i go along with the project.

Looks tidy mate, good man for returning it to Mk1 :) just a suggestion regarding wheels...I think some SR/GTE/GSi 3 spoke alloys would suit it to a tee :thumb:

Well it's to early yet to talk about wheels but thanks for your suggestion i'll check those alloys out i don't really know how do they look like and if it would suit the overall look i want the car to have. Right so today i carried on with the stripping, i took the lights, bumper, covers, steering wheel and dashboard of. I found some rust well i knew about it but now i could have a closer look.

Breaknob

Fuuuuh, just finished for today. I took of the upholtery, popped the cracked windscreen out (does anybody know how can you remove that properly without cracking it?) then i unbolted the seatbealts, i broke all of those handles on the top (i don't know their name) so it was fun. Both of the rear inner arches are rusted, on one side it has a huge hole aswell, the boot has a smaller hole and then the battery tray, i'm scared of that one the most and i might need to change both sills, oh nearly forgot i have a hole on one of my doors. phew. What else...? oh yeah loads of small dents on the roof arches, wings, doors, bonnet well everywhere =)).I'll try to pull out the engine this week and then i'll start cleaning the rust out. Hoppefully i'll be able to upload images soon.

Today i popped out the drive shafts they are not in a bad shape, they just need greasing and new cv boot, brake calipers seased one of the brake hoses has a cut on it, brake discs are warped, i can throw the pads away, some ***t put some lowering springs on it with the original shock, i had a laugh seeing that they chopped out of the lowering spring. Gearbox is alright, i can change the gears smoothly, the sump is smashed a bit maybe the head gasket is gone i'm not sure because i didn't had it running really as i got it i started stripping it. When i went after it to pick it up i didn't even cared what problems it might have cause everything can be fixed =)). Next time i pull out the engine. I like this car it's so simple.

Breaknob
10-03-13, 08:52 PM
Right, i took the engine out i still have some bits on the shell that i want to take of and then i start repairing the chassis.

Well i had a look at those alloys as you suggested and managed to grab 5 of them it's not the design i was looking for but they look allright and it was very cheap so they going to be allright until i finish the car and i'll be able to buy those american style ones. Thank you for the suggestion mk1nova_rich!

Breaknob

My alloys turned up today, i bought 5 of the gsi/sr ones, they need respray but that's it. I snatched a set of mk1 headlights and indicators because the car had the mk2 ones. I need two mk1 wings aswell, i can source that easily maybe a rear arch panel on the left side. The weather is cold, i don't feel like working on the car until it warms up a bit. :)

Pedals, steering colum, floor maths, out. I'm waiting for the rust killer, head gasket to com. I'll have a lot of bodywork to do, to many dents all over the place. Wondering how could i sort out the hole at the battery tray. Maybe i'm just lazy i'm not scared of chopping and welding it just takes up to much time sometimes.

Thanks mate, well the battery tray has a big hole so the water kept leaking inside there. Smashed my finger today with a hammer :( it has a 4 cm cut now, maybe it needs operation i'll find out on monday. I was going to smash out a sprinter ball joint, now i know it's better if you take the lower arm off and then use the press to push out the ball joint.

My finger is healed now, i sorted out the battery tray, i'm not a good welder or metal cutter but i'm glad i could do it somehow. My next mission is my nearside inner and outer wheel arch. I've cut out the outer arch already, i need to cut out the rust from the inner arch now.

mk1 and mk2 parts arent going to be all that seemlessly compatible with each other. On top of that Nova panel gaps are generally pretty bad.

Oh well if that's the case then i would just add something to fill in those gaps, maybe cut the bumper by the grill, will see later on first i need to get it painted somehow.

Looks good I would keep it mk1 also but if u must use the mk2 front I think if you play around with the bracket at the back of the bumper you can lift it up and remove the gap or at least reduce it, prob need to weld the hole on the l shape brackets and drill a new hole lower down which will pick up the bumper then drill your wings to suit I did it many years ago it dies work

I fitted one of my alloys today so i have an idea how will the car look on them. I, m going to keep the wheels in silver maybe not the original silver but a more pearl one.
I want to fit my steering rack back and all the other stuff slowly but i was thinking if it is worth painting it with normal car paint or it's just a waste of time, i mean i'm not going to race this car but if i paint it i don't want to see it peeled of in 2 weeks.

sometimes the oils in our skin can mess up the finish, from touching things before the paint goes down.

doesn't look bad from here :)

I'd say that has lifted due to oil/grease. Did you use an etch primer? As you always sure when working on bare metal.

Yess mate 3 coats of etch, 3 coats of 2k primer 3 coats of lacker that's what i used. I sanded down a bit more and tryed to blend it in but it's doing the same thing, i'll just leave it, it could have come out nice but it's too much headache with it. I have other things to sort out.

Well, well i've put the nova asside for a bit. I was sorting a few minor stop on my punto that i bought last year as my daily driver. The flexi part of the middle exhaust pipe was all coroded, was leaking badly the replacement was ordered but what i didn't know was that the back box was all crap inside so when i changed the middle section realized that i need a back box aswell but i didn't ordered that. I needed a miracle now it was 18:30, i didn't wanted to leave the car in the garage so i went out in the back and i found a sport back box removed last year from a peugeot, grabbed that one. After i chopped the pipes of them i lined my new back box up to the car, then i just welded some new mounts on the chassis grabbed some universal exhaust rubbers, built up the exhaust pipe from the middle section to the back box and at 21:00 the sound of the punto resembled the sound of a subaru =))

Right but this thread is not about puntos. I stripped my front shocks from the nova, both of them knackered. No wonder, somebody threw some lowering springs probably 40 or 60 mm over the standard shocks (deadly duo) by the looks of it the rear is going to be the same so i need an allround kit now. So i need some advice, help call it as you want, i need to know if i can lower the nova 60 mm on the original sr 14" alloys without rolling my arches in the front and the rear. And some help with this lowering spring. How could i find out how much it lowers? Cheers !

I left the shocks alone now, jumped on the engine, took the sump of, i think it was leaking and it was smashed aswell. The crank seal area looks messy that might need changing aswell.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/542/4f3s.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/f24f3sj)

does this sump needs changing or not necessarely and do i need to put a paper gasket back on or the newer type gasket sealant?

Cheers, Damo and millworm ordered the new sump, until it arrived i stripped the engine, decarbonized it. then bought a few more part. Brand new budget suspension kit from germany, a pair of genuine mk1 wings in a funky colour, changed one of the lower arms, somebody smashed it and it got bent badly. There's still plenty to do.

Started to clean the wings of rust, after i removed the wing flashers i ended up with two small holes just for the wires to go through. I would rather fiberglass the holes and leave it without the wing flasher i just don't know if that's how it was standard. Anyone has any idea my nova is from 1989, did they had the wing side flasher or no, will it pass mot? Cheers!

Benn

It will need them for the mot. Maybe run temp stick one ones come mot time...

Safe, you had a massive busy and rich table there. I'm glad i could meet a few people from the forum but really wasn't the place for chit chat's. Everyone was hunting parts. Cheers for the pricedrop on them.

On sunday i managed to primer the wings, i wanted to fit my steering rack but those u clamps were in a bad shape so i just cleaned the and etch primered them, going to paint them black.
