right as most of you might know I'v got an L reg nova that was a 1.2 single point injection and it had a cat on it but I decided to change the 1.2 for a 1.4 sr engine in january/february, the sr engine came out of a car that didn't have a cat on it, but now my m.o.t has come I had to put the cat back on for the emissions and it FAILED THE M.O.T due to emissions, it was running high co2, 1.98 or something like that so my car is currently in the garage having the 1.2 put back in for it to pass the m.o.t, I did think about breaking it for parts but decided against it due to being an L reg as there arn't many around. so if you think about putting a different engine in your car that didn't have a cat and your car does think twice before doing anything, I'v learnt the hard way make sure you don't do the same YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

The exhaust emission level to pass is in relation to which is older; the car or the engine. Your car should have been tested using the emissions figures for the sr engine, not for an L reg.

Quote from MOT tester manual

Test according to which is older, engine or vehicle.
e.g. A 1995 car fitted with a 1991 engine (of whatever make), test to 1991 standards for emission purposes.

Note: The onus is on the vehicle presenter
to prove engine age.

I have a gte (1988) engine in my K reg nova. it passed the mot test with no problems. Go tell your MOT centre this information and let them look it up. It can also be found online

alex is correct, it is based on the year of the engine not the year of car, how do u think ppl with corsas stick valvers in without a cat ;) they get a pre 92 2.0 engine sorted :D

also it might pass without cat allthough if the engine is meant to have it the mot tester may well frown, if u have a cat engine and mod that engine with a decat pipe for example, just swap it back over for your test, its not a big job and not a lot to ask once a year in my opinion.

good luck

dont swap back engines thats just madness!!!

will

by any chance is the garage that failed your car swapping the engines over. maybe they need some extra money.

They may have seen the CAT on the car and tested it to CAT standards. go back to them and explain it

you need to prove its a pre-cat engine

point out the engine number on the block

14nv (the SR engine) is NOT on the cat list and so does not have to be tested for cat emission levels

YOU have to point it out tho - they wont go looking by themselves

tell the MOT station to go fetch their MOT manual and look it up

here it is for refrence

http://www.motuk.com/mot_manual/6-4.htm#14

you'll notice it says:

Vehicles fitted with a different engine

Test according to which is older , engine or vehicle.

eg. A 1995 car fitted with a 1991 engine (of whatever make), test to 1991 standards for emission purposes.

Note: The onus is on the vehicle presenter to prove engine

so there :D

My advice to all of you is:

During your years of driving, find a decent MOT station, preferably one with an interest in motorsport and stick with it. Over the years they'll get to know you and start trusting you to fix problems after they have passed it. The garage I use turn a blind eye to things like high emmisions from using twin 40's, and let things like ball joints go through as they know I'll go home a sort it.

ive taken the CAT off my 1.2i, when it comes round to mot time, do you think i could get away with saying theres a older 1.2carb engine in my car?. The two engines look the same dont they?
