patches in what?

its debateable whether you need to go any thicker than OE, but it wouldnt do any harm providing you can cut and work with it easily.

When i have been desperate for metal i have actually raided my wifes baking tray cuboard in the kitchin so anything will do if i were to plate it i tend to use 1mm/1.2 mm thick due to being easier to manipulate with a hammer

I've always used 1mm plate, as said its a lot easier to work with.
