View Full Version : Andy's Mustard Yellow SR Restoration
Here goes another Project LOL
After longing for another Nova for ages, and wanting to be violent with the 205,i had to have another. What started off as "i need some stuff for my autograsser" has now ended up with my owning another 1.3 sr which,to be fair,is absolutely shagged
Its in need of a FULL restoration,i believe i speak on behalf of many when i say i really have scrapped far better! For the others,i have seen worse MOT'd
So a few weeks ago it landed at the Theatre of Faildreams.
This weekend Johnathan spudly came up to help out,and to get truly wasted
This will be a slow project....as money is tight these days....
Removed the wings, the bumper and grill and had a general look around, some seriously bodgetastic repairs from the many previous abusers!

Plans were for a big block conversion, but i am very very tempted to turbo the little 1300.
Cant recall ever seeing one done.
Christ, she does need some loving. Has the whole n/s/f chassis leg been replaced?
Love the idea of a 1.3 turbo.
Just the inner wing and turret areas,it needs the leg replacing as its had a whack and then been pulled straight i would say.
LOL wait til i get it on the spit for the underneath haha
**** that id just remove the I.D and re shell it! 1300 turbo sounds fun :d
Anything can be fixed on a nova
Not many mk1 yellow SR's still alive
Keep going with it
**** that id just remove the I.D and re shell it! 1300 turbo sounds fun :d
Then its just another ringer.
Or an sr rep.
I will not reshell.
Christ, these must be rarer than sports now
7ova,i will keep going, but progress will be slow as il be saving for panels.

Ah i see, nothing to bad after a good clean up and trim and weld then.
Ah i see, nothing to bad after a good clean up and trim and weld then.
Hmmm....we shall see!! lol
Nah,in the grand scheme of rust and resto's,its a proper job but not as bad as some of these mk1 escorts and mk1 mini's you see been done

Looks a good project, a bit of tlc and it'l be looking good. Also like the idea of a 1300 turbo. Deffinitely something different.

That's very very true, i guy a guy building a mk1 Mexico. Whole floors been removed, back panel, half the bulk head. That's the first part...
When you get cracking, it will come together great.

Saw much worse.. Be good once done and 1300 Turbo does sound fun :thumb:
Yeah, i have seen them build stuff up from like just chassis legs!
Only disadvantage for me is the panels are obselete for alot of the Vauxhall Nova

Yeah, but most are still able to be gotten... I didn't think i'd get a roof skin but i did.
Nice mate
Looks like you got a bit of fabrication to do on the front
don't look that bad tho, rebuild inner wings, bit on legs, new front panel
What's the rear end like?
It got standard interior?
1300 Turbo FTMFW I'm slowly doing mine lol

Looks like you have got your work cut out! Love the mustard yellow Sr's, my friend had one years ago and sold it to someone who already had one (LET?). Not sure if they are on here though?

Great project!
It will be worth the work - doubt there are many genuine yellow SRs still in existance and this one even has a local reg number.
What's the rear end like?
It got standard interior?
Back end is probably as bad from what we have seen, both corners of the boot floor are holed so that means the rear chassis legs will also be through lol
Its got the later mk1 SR interior as unfortunately its a change over one so didnt come with the early tailgate/daytona check/snowplough!
It will be worth the work - doubt there are many genuine yellow SRs still in existance and this one even has a local reg number.
Thats probably the main reason behind his determination tbf, we have both scrapped much much better shells unfortuanetly, which also has some bearign on this too, as all of the reasonable novas are either weighed, or in the hands of enthusiasts these days, so were probably all scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of the ones still in the wild!
Just out of interest, how did you know it was a local reg number, it is btw, from a dealer just up the road from me/where Andy is from originally!

Gonna keep ya going this is mate! Il be keeping an eye on it
rear isnt as bad as the front from a quick look.
Attacked the back end with my jack handle yesterday and nowt other than the rear part of the boot floor penetrated.Legs are ok i reckon to go again.
Rarity is deffo the method behind the madness, where is there another for sale unless its for a gazillion skynet dollarz??
i cannot wait to see this getting grinded up and weighed in! lol
i cannot wait to see this getting grinded up and weighed in! lol
Nah im not weighing it in mate lol
Il end up smoking again and probably on the skag though from the stress of it haha lol

Aye not many of these about now.
I reveresed a G reg 1.3 SR through a wall many many many moons ago lol best £400 my mate ever spent that was lol
Most people when hitting walls go into it... but not Mike! Do it properly eh? lol

When is the cutting, spot weld drilling and chopping beginning then?
When is the cutting, spot weld drilling and chopping beginning then?
I would imagine it will just tear like wet cardboard. No tools required. lol
Did some more today,Started stripping the engine bay, ready to take the engine out.
Saw some more calamity repairs that made me shudder, seriously, the things some people do to cars, unbelievable.
Started removing wiring etc from the very front. Then started unbolting the tie bars.

http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll211/andyspics_album/20130221_161919_zps6afe37ec.jpg
As i dont have an engine hoist, and i need to remove the head anyway,i will be removing the engine in bits...
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll211/andyspics_album/20130221_163705_zps9bee800f.jpg
A scored rocker, most are like this, cam lobes are worn too, judging by the welding on the tie bar,its probably been lubricated internally by crisp n dry or summat lol
Head off, bores are good, will strip it down and take them to be measured next friday for ovality and wear etc.
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll211/andyspics_album/20130221_164632_zpsca08955e.jpg
Hopefully by sunday the engine will be out and bay empty.Thats my aim.
You love it Andy! lol thats a mess. Why is it red and yellow under the hood?

hi Andy
keep up the good work not many left in that colour now, looks like a lot of work ahead, but will be worth it,i am lucky nick j done mine they look great when all done and should be fun on the road with turbo lump.
jason
. Why is it red and yellow under the hood?
Probably tonnes of red lead primer lol
Rep primer, and red panels, carefully spot weld drilled out.
Then just catapulted into the bay and gasless welded lol
Gonna get a brown shell to use for 'panels' mate?
Yeah i need a shell for panels only, wont be reshelling, bollox to that.
Yeah i need a shell for panels only, wont be reshelling, bollox to that.
*Emails thread to SA99* lol
Good stuff like Andy. Be good to see it reborn!
lol
Yeah its too easy to reshell.
Plus its just a base model with sr shiz otherwise.
Yeah i need a shell for panels only, wont be reshelling, bollox to that.
Well done mate, get it saved  + rep
Some of the repairs that happen over time really are worrying.
This kind of ridiculous resto makes me wanna raid the garage just to donate whatever I can. On that note may have rear chassis legs for you
lol
Yeah its too easy to reshell.
Plus its just a base model with sr shiz otherwise.
Word up.
Mind how you go though. Replace too much, and with some of the busy-bodies on here, you could find yourself being requested for a BIVA test. :/
The internet is crap sometimes. GR10 4 pr0n0 and petty arguments though. lol
In that case most on here should have one a biva test then lol
Burgo, that would be good, thanks, fire some pics up of anything that is for sale that would be of use.
You can have them I dont need them. Can have all the inner arches and boot corners aswell if you want
As in the panels? Bloody hell yeah! That would be awesome!
Calamity Josh

looks like a good project nice to see it saved, simple option... brown reshell! lol
You bloody workshy lot,"reshell" lol

Somebody else welded mine. lol Granted, not 'that' type of Escort, but still just as keen to drop to bits.
I was scared to jack it up/put axle stands under it. lol lol
Fair play to the parts donations! If I had owt, I would join in, mate!
Whats left of the backend of my saloon is coming out so either side of the ally sheet (anyone want an ally floor? Lol)

The panel isn't too souple without torsion?
Nope the shape of things floor actually puts enough of a bend in it to make it rigid enough
So last update i recall saying i would have engine out by last weekend....
No.Not a chance,i got trashed all weekend lol
So this weekend i had a couple of hours yesterday afternoon, and the same again.
I have to keep the faith, you will see why!

http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll211/andyspics_album/20130303_182218_zpsbdeb38f4.jpg
That will be where the battery tray has holed through and rotted the bulkhead mate, a certain lazer blue 1400 SR that has had about a million owners on here, was holed in exactly the same place, the then owner 'filled' it with fibreglass
Next the doors were removed, thought i was gonna have a mare with these but they were easy

Either way its utter garbage!
Next week i will be starting stripping the interior, dash to back.
That will be where the battery tray has holed through and rotted the bulkhead mate, a certain lazer blue 1400 SR that has had about a million owners on here, was holed in exactly the same place, the then owner 'filled' it with fibreglass
The battery tray itself is good,im guessing its gone along the seam.
or its just fukked. After seeing a rotten through OIL PRESSURE SWITCH!! owts possible lol
The oil pressure switch has rotted through, lmao thats mad as fook lol
I expected the block to be rotten lol
Jesus wept, that thing has rotted in places that cant even rot, wtf lol
Bit of work to do there, that red inner wing bodge is shocking lol
You going to have to fit another leg then?
Oh aye its bad lol
Yeah another leg will be fitted
Fair play for tackling it tho mate, be epic if you see it through
Front end will take a while I reckon
You managed to shift the 205?
Front end is a doddle if i have the panels.
Yeah 205 has now sold awaiting collection.
Fair play for tackling it tho mate, be epic if you see it through
I have zero doubt that Andy will be able to do it, availability of panels is a different question though
Btw Andy, Rob found a battery tray in his parts stash this aft :d
For you obviously mate lol
Mines peachy :d
Yeah 205 has now sold awaiting collection.
Money for panels then ? lol
you looking for genuine ? or decent pattern ?
no sadly its all accounted for on bills etc.
Didnt get much for it in the end but nevermind, you live and learn.
Either really, aslong as theyre decent and at the right price.

I know what you mean. I found a Jamaica Yellow SR that could have been saved but the current owner had plated it absolutely everywhere over all the rot. It was not a nice job and it totally put me off, especially at the money he wanted for it.
