I stripped the underside of my car back to bare metal. then i brushed on 3 coats of red oxide what do i put on next. Some one said leave it as is so you can see any problems. The car will only be out in summer thanks

I wouldn't leave it just covered in red oxide, which I think is really considered a bit old fashioned these days anyway (I zinc etch primed mine then painted it), I would coat it in an over paintable stone chip/rubber type coating similar to how it was from the factory. The idea of checking to see any problems as a routine is sound, but having as many layers as you can covering that metal will help prevent anything happening in the first place.

i used hammerite stone chip guard, the grey type as i thought it matched my bumpers, then i'm going to give it a coat of clear waxoil to protect it further, would recommend the hammerite stuff to anyone, was something like £8,99 from halfords, there large tins too :) probably taken about 4 to do the whole underneath, inside the rear arches, all the front arches, including the inside of the wings and underneath the crossmember. next on the list is powdercoat and refit all the running gear :thumb:

Id put on some kinda of stonechip/underseal. The stuff above doesn't look very much like underseal.

it's chipguard? goes on pretty thick in all fairness especially after a good few coats, it's getting a coat of clear waxoil next

Why is there only a handful of people on here that know what proper underbody guard is?
Stonechip is for sills/valances/door bottoms etc and is overpaintable, not underseal protection whatsoever.
You want the rubberised protection like raptor truck guard etc
And FFS waxoyl isnt an underseal either, its for cavities, box sections and inner door skins and panels.
Ever wondered why manufacturers dont use it standard? Cos its fukking sh1t thats why lol

my mistake then, ahh well. it's far more than she had on origionally, was only paint and dirt, and all that it has is a tiny hole in the bottom of the front wing, and possibly wants some rear arches in the future :) it's only going to be used this summer then she'll come off the road and i'll get something else for the winter, when it comes to that i'm looking into getting work to do a full respray anyway

*edit* would this be good for a coat over the top? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-x-3M-Car-Body-Schutz-Black-Underseal-Underbody-Coating-Gun-08861-/180932600354?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item2a206c6222

Ive heard raptor truck guard is the dogs whats-its in underseal protection. Is plastered all over trucks and even on the of flat beds ..
Gotta get round to doin mine.
Best way is how ? Clean it up, get primer down and then go rubber sealent stuff like raptor ?
Can it be used in your arches too ?
Sorry for the thread jacking

from asking about 3M sell the best underseal and it cvan be painted over aswell

ive put hammerite stone chip on my front inner arches, as its easy to check if its damaged, i would do the whole underside as it will be a right pain in the **** getting right under the car checking it all the time

dont buy hammerite underseal its nasty ****

what ever you put on, test it on a small area first. some Xylene based (and other) products react with red oxide. Not so much the red oxide it self but they type of spirit is used in it. it goes on fine, but next morning you can come out to the workshop and find its all on the floor.

you probably know this, but its a warning if you didnt

please paint over the primer with any top coat paint you can find. primer is a porous material, it will soak up water as quick as no paint... i don't care what top coat you use, but get it sealed. then put a decent underseal on it.

ps the post about truck rust proofing stuff... its a bit of a red herring as for mot tests, the chassis & underneath of the bodywork needs to be clean so they can find cracks, and you don't spray crap all over the air valves etc.. and the underside of cabs just have ormal underseal on them cos there is a heaving great engine warming it all up to keep the rust at bay.

You spray in areas no different to oe spec.therefore having no effect on mot.its just harder than normal stuff.
Think of oe like a rubber seal and raptor like a polyurethene

They change the way its made and what's in it. Now it's utter crap. Jake, go to Wickes, buy there direct to metal paint, it's fantastic and you wont get rust comming back.

Ah ok, sorry. It looks very thin. Any underseal/stonechip what's to be thick. So if a stone hits it, it bounces off rather than chipping it or damaging it.
