View Full Version : Locating track rod ends under side of hub (when going low)
Anyone done this? Is it a case of drilling the taper out of the hub, fitting a sleeve and rj? Any pics? :)
Plus, would I notice that much of a difference on a road car?
You don't need to RJ iirc. Just drill out, sleeve and go.
So use the standard track rod end? How does it fit upside down? It's conical in shape so if you fit into a drilled hub, how is it gonna grip?
The rj set up is only seventy quid from compbrake if I recall correctly
Might be with having a look at that then, you know if the rj fits on the standard rack arm Graeme?
The kit does but about twenty mil needs taking off each rack end as they are not as deep as standard ones

You have the sleeve turned so that it replicates the taper and allows the rod end to grip.
Ive searched about this on here tho and someone i forget who was sayin that this made the handling pretty terrible??

Can you explain to the more ignorant of us (namely me) what the benefit of this is? Does it realign the geometery that the slammed suspension may mess up?
My understanding of it is that the lower you go, the more inverted the tie rod arms become. This can induce poor handling characteristics (bump steer) and to sort it out the track rod ends can be inverted to overcome this a little. I'm sure mr Broad will be along to correct me if I'm wrong :)

Hmm I think I'm confusing myself a little. Lets say with the track rod fitted the correct way, ie, on top, the top of the taper is larger than the bottom. If you drill it out is then an equal bore, do you then fit a tapered sleeve the other way and the nut holds it secure? Hmm
You should look into making the wishbones lever, that will have a greater effect than tie rod arms.

He's deleted his pictures, I'll take some pictures tonight for you ;) They're still in the packet from when Olly sent me them lol
Mieran, I'm guessing if you level the steering out and the lower arms are still inverted, this is where you run into handling issues?

is it feasible to move the rack slightly higher on the bulkhead instead? has it been done before?
Novas handle crap when going really low because you have changed the roll centre, read here for more info on this stuff

Iirc that's why you sleeve it.

Phew! Glad i got pics of some car parts! lol
I'm still at a loss of how these fit, can't quite figure how/what do do with the conical shape in the hub? The pics are missing out of olly's thread. Southie, let me do some research and i'll get back to you. :thumb:
