what do they call the stuff wrapped around engine looms, the fibrous stuff, as to be expected mine is all tatty, worn and falling apart so thought i may aswell replace it

is that a bit like the zinc tape i put on my finger if i slice through it and make it bleed?

It's like fabric Sellotape. Away with work today, and at work tommorow, so ill pm you tomm night.

It sticks to itself but not the loom to allow the wiring to move about without straining connections etc

TJ, google "tesa tape" as that's what it's called usually ;)

You have a choice, you can either use a non adhesive insulation tape(black pvc type) or the cloth tape. I think the cloth tape is a rayon self extinguishing if i remember correctly. For originality on my last Sport I used the non isulated type which can be bought from VWP in Ilkeston. The part number is TNA19 or TNA25 from memory. The cloth tape can also be purchased from there.
Vehicle Wiring Products are on the Manners Ind Est. They are very helpfull, I used to work there years ago.
