can twin carbs be fitted to a standard 1.2 and if so, is it worthwhile?

They can, would need the correct jets though, and it really wouldn't be worth the effort on a standard 1.2. You'll spend hundreds to get a few BHP. Get a 1.3, 1.4 or 1.6 engine with a decent cam, then add twin carbs if you have your heart set on the 40's.

the 300 odd quid that a set of webers would cost could be used to fit a std 1400 engine & pay the extra on the insurance

erm...hello and welcome.

yes they can, what is your interpretation of 'worthwhile'?

possible yeh, but would cost alot to buy them with a manifold, set them up, and fuel them.
youd probably only gain about 3 horse power on a 1.2, hardly worth it.
stick with the single pierburg you have, its reliable and economical

Cost vs powergains. from what people have said so far, it seems that going for a bigger engine is more cost effective. My biggest concern is that i'm coming back off a ban so don't want to get stung too bad on insurance. if i had not had a ban i'd be looking for a c20let conversion.

best off just leaving it really mate. just give her a good service so she's as fast as she can be :)
you can get big horse out of it if you pile money into it, but like you say its not cost effective.

leave it a year i reckon, get your claims back on roll, then sort another car or bigger engine.

seen a few people have put in the 1.6 16v out of corsa sports etc... are they good engines?

yes, once you have thrown the restrictive upper inlet into a nearly body of water & purchase a powerbox type manifold

people over look the 1.2 engine as a ****ter but its a short stroke high compressio engine, if you were to stick some 40s on with a lairy cam and a f13cr gearbox i think it would be a good engine!

it would be, and there is no doubt of that. But depending on the expected output to effort/money ratio. the answer first off is likely to be this is not a sensible option. If you wish to explain your budget and power aim and your ability to do anything more than just 'bolt on some random carbs' then we can discuss this further.

as i have said before, you can tune the hell out of a 1.2 & it will still get thrashed by a std 1.4

do you know what, i think i'm just gonna sack the small engine idea off and bite the bullet. i'm an impatient bugger anyway so may aswell get on with it. anyone know if a v6 has been done before?
