No, the idea is on snow you lock the wheels to build up a hump of snow in front of each wheel. It does work, I tested it a few years back (when I had very little better to do at the time lol) as there was discussion about it and disabling ABS on CCUK.
Thats on snow though, not compacted ice.

The best bit is passing £50k+ 4x4 whose tyres are that wide they can't keep their cars in a straight line on snow :d
i did a job on a farm some years back, and it was frosty..... i was driving the 6 tonne benford dumper... another lad was driving a 150 hp case tractor & redrock dump trailer... i decided to race him to the soil tip.. i actually passed him sideways & had to stick it into reverse to keep ahead, then do a j turn before the soil heap!!! great days...
i also had to get a 120cm twin drum roller down a field, round a hairpin bend & up the next field to get it to a cow muck store we were building in the snow.... in the dry, 5 mins tops... in the snow, it took an hour!! i had to zig zag rather a lot with 2 shiny steel rollers & zero grip

7am Ill be somewhere by J4 M6. Eqaully as much fun after the recent spate of HGV fires occuring up there :S
hgv fires are all down to drivers who couldn't care less.....
if you carry a decent extinguisher, & notice a small fire, you pull over & sort it... also, a hot brake (cause of most fires) is so obvious from in the cab, the smell gets to you whenever you slow down... i've even made other wagon drivers pull up in the past cos they were almost on fire... i've crawled underneath & wound their brakes off for them, cos i still carry a tool box....

It's funking shocking tbh. The level of driving ability is unreal. 20mph on a gritted road that's been scrapped... It didn't have snow/ice on to start with! Cars dumped all over the place..
There are 5simple rules to driving in the snow. Follow them and you'll never have a single prob. But no one knows any of them and has no clue how to drive...
What is nice tho is its been dead on the roads all day "cause no one can get to work" so a road i'd have sat in non moving traffic on didn't have a single car on.

The problem with this country is the fact that we as individuals, on the most part are not prepared! The Councils & Highways Agencies can grit & plough as much as they can, if your vehicle is not suitable you aint going anywhere!
I would say 98% of cars on the road are running summer tyres which are totally unsuitable for snow. If we all had winter tyres fitted like some of our European neighbours legally have to, we would not get ourselves in this mess!

TBH for the couple of days snow we get every year, its really not worth spending a few hundred quid on special measures. Either just drive carefully, or if you're incapable of doing that, take a days leave or work from home. Sure if you live somewhere out in the sticks or on a hill then yeah, you may need to invest in some decent kit, but most of us should be able to get by.

Winter tyres are not just good for snow, they are better than summer tyres at temperatures below 7 degrees celcius and in wet weather. That can be from November through to March, so four to five months of tyre usage. Also you are spreading the use of your summer and winter tyres, so price of tyre usage per mile will be the same if not less as the tyres will be more suitable for the conditions.
Lets be fair, it's not just the tyres.
How many time do you see drivers who clearly have no idea how to drive in icy conditions.
Watched the news today and it showed a chap in a BMW, full throttle, going nowhere.
Had great pleasure watch the **** who lives next door but one from me get home in his van. Pull up outside and go and brush his drive clear, then reversing it into his drive and sliding everywhere.
Never had any problems at 5.20 this morning in fresh snow. Never touched the throttle and just drove off.

One of the MD's at work sent an email out today saying that anyone who doesnt feel safe driving in this weather should go home early. Turns out, said MD who's got a Q7 company car didnt even turn up for work today because his 10 mile drive was to much. My 34 mile drive is to much on a good day lol
Although the M6 was deserted at 6.30 this morning so I got my hoon hat on & arrived 20 minutes early lol & then spent 2 hours driving back home :/

I did chuckle, as i left work yesterday one of the managers from the opposite shift told me that his wife got stuck for 2 hours earlier. I went home using the same bit of road....20mins after leaving i was home!! I cant help thinking that its peoples lack of skill that gets them into bother when driving in snow. Simple rule, leave the car at home as suggested!!
(note: before anyone queries why i had my car, there was a pitiful dusting @ 5am yesterday morning!! I was genuinely shocked when i came out at 11:30 to see all the snow!)

Just seen a Bmw come flying round a corner off a cleared road onto a snow covered side road. Now either he is stupid and going too fast or stupid and trying to get a run up at the slight incline. Obviously he lost the back end, slammed on the anchors which made it worse and his back wheel slammed into the kerb. He then spends the next few minutes spinning away trying to get up the slight incline.
Now if he had any sense he would have taken the road that runs parallel to that one which, as a bus route has been cleared and salted. That would have taken him to the other end of the road avoiding the incline and banging his lovely M Sport rims.

thats odd. Pressure should remain constant regardless of tempreature. unless you have a strange boost control setup.

TD's boost differently to petrols, if say it peaks @ 18 psi, you will find that is overboost and it will drop to about 15psi and hold steady, plus its mechanical fuel/boost so theyre never going to be as accurate as efi turbos lol
Yes it is, it's fab. I'm turning the wheel all over the place like a nutcase. lollol
I remember Andy telling me he had ovetaken a bus in his village in the nova, purely due to torque steer, it was at a stop picking up passengers, and he was heading past and floored it to get round before oncoming traffic reached the bus, and it moved over as he floored it, passed it and let off, and it went back lol
Oh mr spud, I'd have kept quiet about the TD boost lark lol

Youre still on the same setup as me, with a let, youre my hero you are :d
The penis land inhabitant knows more than you do lol
In the cold the mass of air consumed will be higher, thus making more power but the pressure shouldn't change unless its got poor control or the mechanical system behaves oddly/badly when ambient is cold.
He probably does and i assume this anyways, but he asked me to explain the variation in boost on a td due to temp, td's (izuzu's in my experience) will boost high, and peak, then drop back down a few psi, and hold steady, ask baxter and hendrix, they will confirm what im saying as thats just what they do, in colder weather (lower intake temps) they will peak higher, dont know exactly why, but they do :d
Is it to do with em not having a wastegate?
I'd imagine the actuator is effected by the cold. Probably contracts to permit higher pressure to run, which isn't good lol
Boost holds steady on mine.

^ This, spikes are usually caused by a leak somewhere, a controller/actuator not reacting fast enough or not being set right.
Think about it, as the external air temp stays pretty much the same throughout the rev range why would it spike purely due to temperature? Surely it would stay higher all the way through, or creep up? Which is why boost creep is caused by cold temperatures, but not spikes (at least not directly anyway).

nice employers you have there.
What is it you do?
Jon_nova1
21-01-13, 09:52 AM
yeah the reason your boosting higher is because the actuater isn't allowing as much air through as it should so by the time its reached the actuater and the expansive properties of denser air have been accounted for it doesn't fit through the gap.
My turbo petrol used to do it due to the wastegate size caused by changing the air filter and exhaust system, it would go from a standard 6PSI to 11PSI then 14PSI on cold days, i just got an external wastegate

Rain washed all the snow away here. :(
I've been staying near Aylesbury all week. Still loads of the sodding stuff here, and my new wonderful car is absolutely useless on the snow/ice! Should've come down in the polo!
well, i was forced to park up my wagon for a week & spent the time snow clearing with various large vehicles... it actually paid better than driving, and a polaris ranger 4x4 buggy with a snowplough on is hilarious.... 40mph max!!!!

Well it's back here again! Seems like people just can't drive in it. There's has been 2 cars that have crashed into my works Gate already. And 100m up the road there is a mini gp that has hit 2 parked cars and it was the BMW mechanic that was driving it, looks to be a write off aswell. Thatl be one happy customer

before the snow there was alot of wind down these ways, and i was walking back from town, when a pretty big branch flew off a chesnut tree infront of me. lucky no one was walking underneath it. it hit the front bumper of a passing bmw and got sucked up under the wheels as he was driving, sounded like it beat up the underside of the car as he drove over it.

I had to brush off a fair few inches off my car before leaving work. I reckon we've had another inch since I've been sat in traffic
