hi peeps, I'm having a problem with my dizzy nova xe, when I start it up and drive for about 5 mins then turn it off and try to restart it nearly flattens the battery but will eventually start, this happens everytime I drive it, any ideas, could it be a coil problem or dizzy or maybe something else? nothing seems loose and when I drive it really hard it starts missing n backfiring, any help appreciated thanks

Check the ignition timing with a light to see if thats out. When was the last time you changed plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rota? You could always take off a fuel line and turn it over and see if it could be lack of fuel pressure aswell

if you run it for more than 5 mins is it ok?

i'd guess its the coil/amp

how old are the plugs & HT leads?

just as a random suggestion, is the cooling system airlocked? cos an overheating head will cause similar problems

mmm I have changed the radiator recently and the dizzy n cap but not the amp & coil, can I use any other coil n amp as I have a few off other vauxhalls (nova n astras!) just wondered if I specifically have to use an xe one.? haven't changed the ht leads for ages but I will, as I have another set, how do I know if it's overheating? cheers for the advice so far ;-)

if I literally start it up and drive 1/4 mile then turn off it won't start instantly., really struggles

sounds like a sensor fault. maybe ECT. stsrt with the basics as Mowgli suggests, then pull the fault codes or read live values.

start no problem when cold?
temp sender could be at fault. next time it does it unplug it and see if it starts , my let did the miss fire thing under hard driving and it was down to the temp sender
