I heard before that Astra GTE 256 and cav 288 brakes used the same caliper just bigger discs pads and mounts, is this true?

Basically I have V6 front brakes and wish to refit 3 spokes so want to use my 256 discs without swapping and bleeding calipers, would this work if I use the smaller discs pads and mounts?

Edit, lucid moment there, am I thinking about 236 and 256 that are changeable?

Doesnt matter, i wouldnt ever swap my brakes to smaller ones just to fit wheels, if you do then youre a fool, you can never have brakes that are too good, theyre the only point (other than tyres) between you and the road, never ever fit smaller brakes, ever!

Hell id even fit v6 brakes to a 1ltr, id love to put ronal teddies on my nova, i think they would look epic and would certainly make the car stand out at shows and the strip, but i couldnt get them over my brakes and wouldnt even consider fitting smaller brakes, dont do it :p

Spud it's only a 1.6 lol it can't go that fast,

Besides 256 is plenty the 288 is just overkill really, I want the car to look bog standard, even found my old SC202 to fit in it lol and a standard back box too

Iain kindly gave me a set of 47.5et 3 spokes so I could do this easily.

If you can lock the wheels at top speed, you don't need better braking.

That being said, I wouldn't ever go down to standard Nova stuff just for wheel choice... and absolutely definitely not in a million years even if you paid me to have cute teddy bear wheels lol

Well the brakes are still upgrades,

I'd have V6 calipers and 256 discs, still better than standard 236 and smaller calipers and a zillion times better than those delco things

I still personally think its a silly idea dude, specially when its to run wheels that i personally arent keen on lol

Teddys are for children
Small brakes are for push bikes.
End of cunnting thread really!!

256's are better than 288's IMO, pedal feel on the 288's are crap in my experience

Eh no lol, you see the 288 discs don't fit inside the 14" wheel lol

Bigger hammers to get small nails in yes, but with brakes.... meh

Surely choice of disk/pad and quality of full braking system factors in before thinking of overall braking contact area.

I'd have thought 236mm ate brakes in good working order with vented discs and carefully chosen pads would even be ample on a 1600 Nova assuming its not grp A spec or something!

That's the way I'm thinking mate but I don't have functioning calipers apart from the ones on the car, I guess I'll just to try it and see

The car is a standard GSI with C16SE

Would think if anything the carrier will be different, only 1 way to find out though. Im in the middle of a conversion just now and have the 2 different calipers there to swap over, i'l split them and see what fits what if the weathers favorable tomorrow.

Nice one Kev,

I would need to strip both cars brakes of to check hence why I was asking here first to save me the trouble if they don't fit :)

No hassle, the 256's are in the boot and the 288's are now on the car but its still up in the air so its no biggy. Will let you know my findings tomorrow.

I thought the 256s had cooling fins in the middle face and 288s dont but a bigger pad surface. Does this have any effect between the two?

I think the caliper is the same on 288mm & 308mm brakes, it just uses different carriers.
236mm vented & 256x20mm(Corsa GSi, Astra & Cav 1.7d) also share the same caliper but with different carriers.

288 and 308 true, the carrier just spaces the caliper out more.

Cool, that helps with her vectra GSI then if she wants bigger discs,

Checked them out as i said i would, on the ones i have here the carrier on both the 256 and 288 is the same size but there is a difference in the size of the actual caliper. All the fittings line up, but basically the gap between the caliper and the carrier that is there on the 256's is taken up with the larger 288 caliper. It also has a larger curved section( the outward edge towards the wheel) which is more prevelant. So thats my findings!

Thank Kev, sounds like I'd need to change the calipers then as the 256 setup is still mega tight on the 3 spokes.
