Just purchased this 750il to fix up and hopefully run as a daily for a bit, why do I feel like I've gone completely mad?

The reason I bought it, 5.0 V12!

Uh-oh! Not a well liked engine iirc. 8 Series owners avoid them for the most part.

Bad move! lol

Oh well the bad news is it needs some engine remedial work lol Fun times ahead

This is the good healthy kind of mad.

Remedial work sounds fun, times costs by 3, add BMW premium... lol

But be happy knowing that despite being an f plate he can still go into a BMW dealer and get every part for that car as the krauts do it right whereas vaux tend to delete any vehicle over 5 years old from their system lol

maybe, but I'm not sure I'd want to! I had to go to dealer for a MAP sensor for mine and injector leak off pipes as they use a smaller OD than all the aftermarket stuff I found, cost about £90, and that was through someone that knew the guys working there.

Might not be too bad compared to modern cars but the MAP sensors only a pissy little 2cmx2cm box with a 3 wire plug.

Iain, good job you have spindly wafer thin arms with three elbows and magnetic fingers.
I think they will come in handy.

RE Vaux deleting stuff (don't they provide service parts for 10 years.after production as with most manufacturers?) we all know noone wants to keep one on the road as long as a prestige marque.

My current daily 5 series looks like a drugdealers car, this one looks like an old man's toy with the chromey arches lol

Hoping I can get away with fettling some ignition components to get it running right and leave it the hell alone but time will tell.

Meh I'll worry about fuel if I ever get it done!

That has never made legislation, it was more of a 'gentlemans' agreement. I'm sure it will make legislation sometime in the next 5 years, much like cars sold in Europe getting DAB as standard by 2014 due to the frenchies turning off the fm in their land.

Quite an old pic but it hasn't really changed, E34 525i, just lowered on staggered Throwing Stars

You can't get a crank pulley bolt from BMW for a e30 325i any more, and that was about 7 years ago!

I like the E34, but it's as much a drug dealers car as a Rover Sterling is a police car.
Was.

I dislike the way any old Beemer is regarded as such. "Check out ma free sixteen efirtysix on an H plate man. Wheel trims da lot. No I aint won the lottery, surprisingly!" lol

Fair point on the jungle juice, but it's all relative.
Don't pay £250 p/m+ on tick for a new car, and you can fuel an older big engined one.

Not many people choose to mind. lol

I actually deal drugs from the E34.

Well you must only have one customer. Or work for the NHS.

L means Limousine in all of those 7 Series, S Class jobs. Longer in the rear.

We want streeto vids. :d

Yes and no, it costs big money to keep parts being made and unless owners goto the dealer then you won't find the oem stocking parts... And owners of poverty brand cars like ford and vaux don't goto dealers after the warranty has run out, whereas most other branded vehicles do for atleast 10 years

the old 7 series was a hoot... my stepdad had an e plate 735 & i made him physically sick showing him just how fast it would go on a long straight road!!!!!!

iaiaiaiain, did you see my previous post about an E30 320 2 dr & a shoehorn????

I would consider a last model 730d as they are so cheap to buy and we never had any real problems with them. A lot of car for the money

Yeah thought you made that post thinking I'd just bought the engine not the whole car! Not sure if I can be bothered to do a transplant with it (yet)!

Yep L is long version, the length of the rear doors and rear legroom is insane.

well, when all of the electronic bits fail & its too much money to repair, which usually happen with big cars, it would make afun project... meanwhile, you could start doing airport taxi work, and wedding hire lol

Uh-oh! Not a well liked engine iirc. 8 Series owners avoid them for the most part.

If i remember these are 2 straight six's which share the same crank. I think each 'bank' is controlled like a separate engine almost independantly. i.e individual MAFs and ECUs. i cant remember how they balance to each other.

I would be interested to hear how it works and what the engine issues are.

mowgli
29-12-12, 11:31 AM
/\ the bmw m power engine in the mclaren f1 gtr was basically 2 m3 lumps in a common crankcase

meritlover
29-12-12, 11:37 AM
how did they balance each bank, did the ECU control it on MAF? there are no balance tubes between each plenum. i dont understand how it doesnt run rough or one bank does all the work. I would imagine TB cleanliness and adjustment is critical, as is CAS alignment for each bank. I can just and so make out 2 actuators on each TB? are these for cruise control or is it all fly by wire?

mowgli
29-12-12, 01:04 PM
i haven't a clue, but i guess they know a lot more about engine mapping etc than i ever will... they were already making the 750 engine, so that was probably a starting point. bmw don't exactly change stuff for the sake of it, so 4pot, 6pot etc share a lot of bits.

the jag v12 & straight 6 shared a lot of common architecture & i'm led to believe the later 24v aj6 heads would fit the v12..

maybe stu has some info on this..

he did point out that the v12 in the aston martin was basically 2 v6 mondeo lumps in a common block, and used 2 mondeo systems side by side to make it work!!!

MK999
29-12-12, 02:22 PM
To be fair it's probably not a bad system at all to control banks seperately, airflow will be monitored, fuel added as needed and timing adjusted which is all that's needed to run an engine, how well it works and emissions etc just depends on the quality of that operation, and it will be optimised for the airflow and temperatures into each bank. It's probably better than trying to work in a single AFM or MAP sensor to run the whole lot, although obviously greater chance for failures from more independant parts.

Troubleshooting could be fun too, is it running rough because this bank has a sensor out, or the other bank has a sensor out and they're not talking to each other so this bank doesn't know it's dragging half the engine with it lol

meritlover
29-12-12, 03:39 PM
i dont think its a bad system at all. It must purely match MAF through each TB.

thats exactly my point.

Except trouble shooting is probably pretty straight forward if you took a methodical approach. You have 2 separate banks, and duplicate sensors on each side. so you keep swapping bits until you shift the fault onto the other bank.

your other one looks better tbh, but i bet its a nice smooth drive with that massive engine sitting up front, cant you get it running on lpg to reduce the running costs

slammed on wire wheels and pinstripe paint low'mofo'riding with your chrome arches lol

So whats actually wrong with the engine Ian?
Misfiring on about 10cyl's or something?? Lol

Iain
31-12-12, 01:29 PM
Chrome arches have already been removed, surprisingly mint under there lol

Frick knows, yeah just horrendous misfiring. All the ignition components are original factory items and its been standing for a bit so playing with those at the moment
