B&Q I think, cheap for a metre's worth

richz_nova

does it mater how thick the wall is of the tube

Iain
27-12-12, 06:12 PM
I guess not, although you want it thick enough to work and thin enough to not restrict oil flow too much

richz_nova

i see what you mean mate, bnq have some 1mm thick ill try find some 1.5 think that might be better??? or is that still to thin anyone?

im wall thickness on such a small bore tube will hold a LOT of pressure. far more than is required here. especially since the bore of the head is such a close fit on the tube.

i found this pic, from what i make out it need to be in the centre how do i know its in the right place http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh601/richznova/tube_zps5a8bc2ae.jpg

Guide here to follow:

http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/engines-transmission/340906-thought-id-have-go-porous-cracked-head-modification.html

The stuff from B&Q will be fine and is pictured in the above how-to.

When you cut the tube to the right length its obvious where you need to stop when fitting it

i would imagine if the tube is the correct length to start with and it is flush with the vertical drilling, then its in right.

also, your issue with communication between the oil and water should cease.

ok cheers for your help guys, i did notice earlier when i took my inlet manifold off, that my head has only one grub screw on the exhaust side but the one in the pic has them both sides is this just because mines early?

My early head had a grub screw on both sides so frick knows. Just make sure you don't hammer it in too far!

meritlover

the above section only shows one grub screw or are there more pictures?

i have only one grub screw in a c20xe head as well and 2 in another head both are GM. is that the difference between early and late?

Just a quick question, my xe head has had this mod done but is still porus? What would the reason be? Tube not in far enough? Not a tight enough tube?

Any answers would be great

Hey lads,

I have a mk3 astra that seems to have this problem.

I dont really have any mechanical knowlege but i am wanting to try and repair the engine before i break the car so i have a decent spare engine for the nova.

Is there any order to taking the parts off etc and should i replace any parts when i do it?

Any help would be great.

P.s sorry for hijacking the thread just didnt see the point in starting a new thread about the same things.

Cheers,
David.

hi mate im not to sure about taking parts off in order, ive just unbolted the inlet manifold off the head. im going to get my mate to pull the head off because i believe the cam holders and stuff need to go back on in the same place they come off or something? and ive also read on the net somewhere ill try and find it, you need to replace all the water pipes, cause the oil thats passed through them will have made them soft. also heater matrix obviously if its not goin back in the same car you dont need to also the water pump???

If the tube is 87MM long; how far should it be tapped in?

Iain

Till yu can't see it when you look straight down. It's behind an oil gallery or bolt hole can't quite remember
