Your car wont have any running problems if theres an airlock init. Try claping off the pipe that come out of the matrix(as looking in engine bay the right one) to dtop lossing the engine coolant tban remove it off the matrix till the water comes out the put back on and remove clamp.

Or look under dash.and see if the lever are move on the heater box when adjust heat lever

I dont get any heat out of the middle vents in my mk1 but i was told that you only get cold air out of them any way and the only warm air come the the upper dash vents to demist the screen

Yer mine i only have hit out of sides and top. Centre is allways cold. I dont move mine of heating the windscreen and it still makes whole car lovely and hot

Could the thermostat be fitted the wrong way round? sounds weird how the temp drops as you drive

Just ouside air cooling the radiator, you will notice it more in the winter as its colder:thumb:

Mine is the same at the mo, heaters and temperature go right down on a long drive, round town or traffic it's fine but as soon as you've done a couple if miles within the air hitting the rad, it cooks right down, I was tempted to block of the grill like the defender boys and black cabs do

Mine will go up to quarter of the way on the guage round town or on a run, but that could be to do with the fact its full of 24 years of road grime stuck in it

sounds like the stat is jammed wide open or missing. this would make the main rad the circuit with least resistance so you will get no flow through the bypass loop which is the manifold and heater matrix. what problems did you have before that made you want to change the stat?

And also, never rule out a faulty part, just because its new, doesnt mean you havent damaged it during fitting, fitted it incorrectly, or its just one that has failed straight away (this is more common than you might think)

Your problem sounds like a faulty stat and nothing more, if it were airlocked you would more likely see intermittent heat and strange cooling/overheating, not near normal operation on tickover, and then overcooling due to movement!

Try another stat in there, should cure your problem!

Or put the stat in a cup of boiled kettle water and see if it opens

it sounds like its already open
