yeah its a 1.4 but its 8valve dosey cow that sold it me doesnt know her engines lol
ok.
on the 8v, the tappets can be removed, drained & cleaned up quite easily.
you need to get hold of the tool used for cam removal, or if its too much money, just get a head gasket.
8v lifters are normally bulletproof, are you sure it's not injector noise? the c14se (if thats what you've got) injectors can be a bit noisy.

Mowgli are they removed the same way as the 1300 nova lifters? using the same tool ? if so im only in stoke on trent and i have the tool you will need, infact if ur free at a weekend i can always pop over and help you swap them over, only took me about 30 mins do mine ( i just bought new ones rather than cleaned them up ) cost me about £50 quid from my local motor factors for all eight

okay matey im the same tbh only come on at night for advice lol
the tool is exactly the same for the 1200, 1300, 1400, 1600 8v engines. the tappets are the same too.
seriously though, you only need a g clamp or vice, a small screwdriver & a can of mr muscle oven cleaner to strip & clean them up
you clamp the tappet & squeeze it in a few mm, then pop the retainer cap off, & undo the clamp. then it should come apart, sometimes they are a bit tight & need 2 mole grips with cloth in the jaws to jiggle them open. then a good dose of oven cleaner gets the black crud off. then when they are clean, just show them a tiny amount of engine oil & put them back in 'dry', just remember to turn the engine over with the sparkplugs out to get the new oil to pump them up.

Thats probably the first thing to do, if the oil is shot then you will definately have noisy tappets, good advice there john.
