What's going on with alot of the prices people are putting on things lately, I know Christmas is round the corner but I can't help laughing at some of the figures people are asking for stuff, I know Novas are constantly getting rarer but we're not talking mk1/2 escorts here, or is it just me getting tighter as I get older??

People need to realise that just because something is old, it doesn't mean it's automatically valuable.

I still see nova's as 50p paper weights as i remember the days when mates bought SR's for £30 and the like lol

I bought an e reg five door merit for bits for £20 with no t&t years ago, i still see them as being cheap old tat :p

You might, but that doesn't mean that's what there worth...yes they aren't mk1/2 Escorts, but on the other hand finding clean, un-abused mk1's IS getting harder so prices will rise...supply and demand etc etc

A lot of that is down to luck I think (and perhaps the area you live in), prices on Nova's has been quite stable really, as they have always been in demand. I've been driving them for 14 years and never managed to get a bargain like that. I've never seen a time when they have been really abundant and very cheap.

Really, i bought my 1990 H reg mk2 1.4 SR in about 2003 for £100, cost me about another £100 to get it through its mot then obviously £60 to tax it lol

It was lowered, had a k&n filter and a full powerflow from manifold back, had the ew and cl which worked, and it was solid too!

L14MNP
03-12-12, 03:51 PM
I paid 150 quid for a 1.4 SR that was garaged, totally standard, on its second owner etc.
This was only 2007.

it is becoming a joke now and starting to get on my tits, its like this with all 80's and early 90's cars now we complain about the prices of some digi dashes but if you want one for a mk2 golf your looking at £550 and upwards ive always called it scene tax

I bought my silver mark 2 with 9 months MOT and 35K on the clocks on it for £300. All it needed was a wheel bearing. Shot through another MOT as well, with no issues. MOT tester even commented on how clean it was. Now it's rotting on my drive as I'm trying to shift the TD. Boss was nice and bought me a van, so the TD is now pointless. Little too much work for my (lack of) skills.

The silver one needs a tidy up and some surface **** ground back and primed up etc, and a couple of dents knocked out, but other than that, not a lot of stuff needs to be done. Body work wise anyways lol.

Just need to find myself an X18XE1 then I will be very happy

Parts for all old cars are on the up now. Which is a bonus for a seller :D

Although theres still a fair few boggo reasonably clean 1.2/1.4's about for sale for like £500 etc.

EDIT: On the other side of things though, even the cheapies dont sell! I had my Got Bored Corsa for sale for £1k all in. That was like £3k's worth of mostly new top end parts (JRE engine parts, Sparco buckets, GAZ coils, RFX's etc) had no takers, so broke it, hiked the prices & sold it mostly with ease on eBay for nearly five times its asking price of £1k. Even sold the rolling shell for a fair old whack, after one classic ebay messer admitaddly, but it still sold none the less.

The scrappage scheme and the value of scrap metal have seen virtually all cars languishing in peoples driveways disappear. I used to ask people if I could 'have' their cars and the only benefit to them was the fact I was taking an eyesaw off their drive. That never happens anymore, for a good few years as well. This means buying cheap cars for spares isn't worth it anymore (for me). So, all these 'bought for £60' cars are worth £100 or more in scrap and thats where they go. This close to London means that recovery truck owners trawl the streets and have scrapped anything they can get their hands on.
This takes the bottom of the market out and adds a few quid more they next tier up as people say 'I could scrap it for more than your offer' etc.
Then you have to add the effect of guys in the thirties who have spare cash buying novas to relive their youth and do what they couldn't afford when they were younger. They dont mind paying more dollar as they have it to spare. Again adding to the price of the market.

But as with any market, you can be in the right time at the right place and find a bargain. Apparently.

Stating someone fails at life on a messageboard is OK though?

With any luck, done this year... and my budgeting isn't amazing, basically it costs me 7.5k a year which is fairly average from talking to people etc, I've put about 8k into it myself from working summers etc and have debts floating around 4k.

It's frustrating at times as there are situations where you can save yourself money by spending more in one go, i.e year worth of tax, insurance in one hit etc etc and sometimes you just can't.

And no, not a media course lol Motorsport engineering, so similar job prospects really :p Hoping to get something vaguely motorsporty shifting parts or similar while I try and nudge my way into race engineering but I might try my luck with a few chassis based jobs too.

Doesn't fit my mentality though, I like proper performance stuff, tbh after seeing a couple of lectures this year I'd rather go into research engineering like fusion power/defense etc, I used to think Motorsport stuff was high tech on materials etc but they were quoting alloys and elements I'd never even heard of being used for fusion reactors lol

Even most of the shonky crap you see in less than top level motorsport irks the **** out of me so I don't know how I'd even cope looking at crash structures and oh we couldn't afford the good stuff parts all day lol

Couldnt agree more TBH.

Mk, youll probably find that once you finish you degree, you will struggle to find work doing what youd like to do, and probably have to settle for something carp like stress analyst or brake tester etc just to get your foot in the door!

Not that that would be crap money mind. Where I work currently have a vacancy for a Chassis Engineer, £17.49 p/h PAYE or £22.35 if your self employed.
