My Nova palyed up the other day at knockhill but then drove home (125 miles or so ) perfectly.

It is a 1.4 with a pierberg 2e3, and it was extremely cold at Knockhill. The plastic bit that sits behind the grill around the radiator is removed from this car to help keep the engine cooler when on the track.

Today I took it out and after revving it a bit it started missing a bit, I pulled in to check the fuel filter in the engine bay to see if the electric pump was pushing fuel in, it was fine.

Then when driving the car back in the dark where the temperature was even lower (it is really icey here) the car missed worse and everytime hard throttle was applied it started missing.

The question is, has anyone here had carb icing and how does it affect the driving? Is it really cold enough for this to happen?

It would be fantastic if that was all that was wrong with the car but to wait for warm weather to check for sure in Scotlnd is a long wait!

It could be icing, but it could also be poor fuelling/iffy ignition with the denser air from the extra coldness.

it's on a K and n air pancake filter, should I put a normal filter on with the colder air?

I'd give it a go, worst that happens is you get the same effect again, best is that you cure the issue.

Thanks, I might also change the spark plugs but I doubt life will be that simple!

I would fit the plastic bit at the rad again.

That went on when I came home last night, I'll put on a standard air box in a wee while and go for another test run, mobile phone and aa card at the ready!

I had this all the time with the metal type k&n bolt on filters. Putting the standard airbox setup on (just for the minus temperature periods) resolved this.

Thanks, it would be great if thats all it is, fingers crossed.

You need the standard air box with the warm air feed from the exhaust manifold that keeps a little warm air to the carb to stop it freezing someeven have a little flap to flip over for winter and summer to cut off the cold air feed my old Sr used to do this all the time just pull in tick over a few minutes and go again

I haven't got an sr filter here for it but I have my 1.2i box so with some modifictaion I'll put that on it. Yes if I pull over for a few minutes then it is fine but on the track, it means I miss yet another session. Is it a pierberg weakness? I have never experinced this before although if it is just temperature then I am greatly relieved.

It's only when you've got a k&n on it's just sucking in too much freezing cold air and when the fuel atomises it's just freezing it once you've got a little warm air to it it will solve your problem and when temps pick up again swap it back think I've got an Sr one here but not much good to you in the wrong country lol

Also I see your in Aberdeen brrr say it's chilly up there plenty of cold air

always had this when running the pierberg 2e3 . best thing is to throw it in the bin.
