wow, itll be heroic if its done for pv.. at least the weather wont be stopping you with having a decent lockup.
Nice work on the front, will the pipes not be very close to the ground? You don't wanna run a smaller cooler then?
wow, itll be heroic if its done for pv.. at least the weather wont be stopping you with having a decent lockup.
Yea it would be nice, it it looks like its bot going to happen then i wont jut rush it for that sake of it, we'll see how the next few weeks go
Nice work on the front, will the pipes not be very close to the ground? You don't wanna run a smaller cooler then?
Pipes are pretty close but im gunna make and weld ali ones like you suggested so should be stronger if the worst happens, also im gunna wind the coilovers up a bit.
Thought about a smaller one but it was always gunna be hard to hide with the small bumper and once the engines together it should be a turbo and managment upgrade away from 450hp so would have to upgrade at some point
started today by center popping the block ready for my oil squirters, only got that far as i had to wait for the jets to be dropped off so i could measure them and get the hole size right
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/C305E88D_zpscb9d07f4.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/C305E88D_zpscb9d07f4.jpg.html)
did get the holes drilled but havent got a photo of that yet, also started making the groove but my ball nose burr is too big so stopped that till i can sort a smaller one (any ideas what size burr is needed and also how deep to make the groove???)
got the ic bolted up properly too
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/70151022_zps912ff125.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/70151022_zps912ff125.jpg.html)
then started to sort out the turbo intake so i dont have to chop the slam panel
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/B7F7A504_zps4dd12a6f.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/B7F7A504_zps4dd12a6f.jpg.html)

also came home to a nice prezzie for myself
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/05B3E20D_zps3fa681d6.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/05B3E20D_zps3fa681d6.jpg.html)
that is all
Inlet looks good, i messed about with mine for ages....
Ooooo i want a wideband, where you'd get it from? Love that your planning 400+brake already..
cheers, it might need some more fetteling once i get some tacks on it and some more silicon hose, all i had to use was a small piece left over form my ibiza. out of interest what size pipework have you used cause the afm is massive, like 80mm.
wideband came off ebay, £152, could have got it cheaper from states but it came within 2 days so cant complain. im only planning bigger power so i dont do aload of work, then have to redo everything again in a few months, gunna have enough work to do when i relocate turbo!
i'll get there with it
You ally weld? I use a trimmed down Roose hose, which i cut wrong and f**ked it up. So it's now a **** hole to fit.
Guessing the wideband was from where i've been looking, same price. relocated turbo? For big power? Or space?
weve got ali mig wire so i can tack it then get someone good to weld it, same with all the other boost pipes. where sells the roose kits?
wideband was from xenon or sumone, shame i cant test it yet, cant fault service tho, quite fancy the aem tru boost guage but there a bit pricey! relocating turbo cause theres not alot of room where it sits now for a gt28/30
just found the roose site, this what you used? http://roosemotorsport.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_3_118&products_id=372
Yep that's the one, i just badly trimmed it trying to get the filer to sit in a different place. Mistake.
Nice bit of kit for the welder, very very handy. And ah, nice turbo, no afm which is nice for the hidden look....
cool i think i'll get one ordered. yea no afm will be good thats why i dont want to cut the slam panel

Can't believe how fast your doing this! Fair play! Will be rather epic if it makes PVS!
Yeah deffo. I really want my filter and afm out of the bay...
todays progress, got the block sorted for jets, just need to take it to work and clean it out in the wash tank then i can fit jets
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/87B0F75B_zpsab8375a4.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/87B0F75B_zpsab8375a4.jpg.html)
did find a problem while looking at it tho, pic seams to have turned out pretty poor but its a rather large crack
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/0A7837DB_zpsb576f46b.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/0A7837DB_zpsb576f46b.jpg.html)
so i ground it back and welded it up
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/A654B4E6_zpsb6776f52.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/A654B4E6_zpsb6776f52.jpg.html)
also got crank back from machine shop with new bearings
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/D62C2D7C_zps57fcfac4.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/D62C2D7C_zps57fcfac4.jpg.html)
and 3 layer steel headgasket turned up
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/0EA39DD5_zps62684825.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/0EA39DD5_zps62684825.jpg.html)
seam to remember something about drilling the rivets out but if anyone can give me an insight that would be great
cheers
Good work.
cheers.
got my block cleaned up today to make sure no swarf what left in there
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/584CDB30_zps440f68fb.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/584CDB30_zps440f68fb.jpg.html)
then got home to find my afm pipe had arrived already which was nice
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/6E1583D1_zps54b34f89.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/6E1583D1_zps54b34f89.jpg.html)
so ive offered it up
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/C628BF42_zps4b972e70.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/C628BF42_zps4b972e70.jpg.html)
which looks good, but doesnt leave alot of clearence for filter
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/5B42F6B0_zps149d0945.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/5B42F6B0_zps149d0945.jpg.html)

looking on the bay, looks like a hks filter is about 90mm deep so hoping that will fit
also got the crank fitted
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/CE911A0C_zpse932279e.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/CE911A0C_zpse932279e.jpg.html)
and was gunna fit my pistons
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/0DC73F26_zps0292b718.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/0DC73F26_zps0292b718.jpg.html)
but couldnt fint piston ring compressor so that is all for tonight
Very much how mine sits, looks good too. I had to use a small mushroom filter as the gap was tiny.

Why bind yourself to a length of silicone hose that's easily cut?
Why bind yourself to a length of silicone hose that's easily cut?
The pipes a long bend with only the end flated big enough for the afm so theres not much to be gained from cutting it.
Not got much progress today as ive been at mallory but did get the pistons fitted when i got back

I've just put a zlet head gasket on my XE and had to drill out 3 of the rivets, you only leave the top right one in
Can I also ask you where you got that inlet pipe from mate?

Ahh thats brilliant mate cheers. Did you have to do anything with the water ways as they only have small holes or is this left to help keep water in the head?
The silicone inlet came from ebay mate, £73, its a roose item but was about £6 cheaper. I have since seen a 2nd hand item on ebay which was going for peanuts but its in red
I didn't touch any of the water ways and just drilled the rivets out
not updated for a while but i have been chipping away at it, unfortunatly ive have a few delays, went to build the head up an found a broken valve guide
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/4177B912_zpsa93d2e46.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/4177B912_zpsa93d2e46.jpg.html)
so had to take that to the machine shop, hopefully have it back before the weekend so i can get the engine built up.
the blocks all together and painted ready
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/1B1DA6B5_zpsbdcfa577.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/1B1DA6B5_zpsbdcfa577.jpg.html)
also been trying to sort boost pipe routes out, started by ordering a 45 elbow
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/9EF4258F_zps22532e60.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/9EF4258F_zps22532e60.jpg.html)
then instead of changing the blue dump valve pipe, ordered some silicone tape
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/skud52/Snapbucket/6CA55E2D_zps80f04e70.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/skud52/media/Snapbucket/6CA55E2D_zps80f04e70.jpg.html)
which is really good stuff, so i wrapped the pipe and really pleased with the result, and for a fiver, saves me a couple of quid on a new pipe

still not got my head back yet so unfortunatly cant get the engine built up which is a bummer
Rear box looks good. Nice work on the wiring. All the extra pipes with the let can be a nightmare.
Yea massive nightmare, have you ran te breather pipe of the intake up to the rocker cover? Im also thinking of drillin yhe outlet on the inlet to take a bigger fitting then using that as my turbo water feed, the i just beed to work out the return. Shame its all on the 1 side reallly, and the tight side at that!
Ill get you pics later, mine run thru the inner wings via the bulk head.. Maybe thru where your loom will go then back in to the inner wing from there? Or thru the steering arm hole.. But that might untidy..
Oh right yea be good to have gander mate cheers
Hope these help,
Vac lines, oil breather (top) AFM, crank sensor, CTS and stat wires (bottom) Again been tidied up since lol

Where they come in, bit untidy at the building time. Since been tidied up.You could run yours in with the loom, then out under and into the wheel arch... (where my bonnet cable runs)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/bennh/Car%20updates/IMG_7718.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bennh/media/Car%20updates/IMG_7718.jpg.html)

I've just put a zlet head gasket on my XE and had to drill out 3 of the rivets, you only leave the top right one in
Can I also ask you where you got that inlet pipe from mate?
Sorry to hijack but do you know if you would have to drill the rivets out to fit it on a 2.0 8v engine? It would explain a problem my brother had last year if so....

If any of the 4 rivets will get crushed between head and block then it will need drilling out
finally a bit more progress, took the old water outlet out of the inlet manifold and drilled and tapped it to accept a larger union

cheers
Does enough water out of the inlet?
I hope so, i would have thought the same if not more than out of the rad?? And should flow straight away, not once the thermostat opens?? Also, it shouldnt matter which way the water flows through the turbo does it??
Its all new to me so correct me if im wrong!
Cheers
started running the breather pipe under the wing today like Benn has, cheers for the photos!

not sure about which way to pipe up the solenoid tho is anyone could advise??
cheers
The rads full of water anyway, so i took it will it suck what it needs from it.. But either way there's water there. Like what you've done under the wing.

Cheers, just need to work out ho its coming back up to the rocker now. Will get some more pipe from work tomorrow. Another bloody hole I need to make!
lol yeah, drilling holes is fun. Behind the inlet from the bulk head? Some where by the clutch cable?
Yeah somewhere around there, hopefully it'll all be covered by the top hat cover. Need to run the wide band to which needs a big hole for the plug. Never ending!
That can be done right at the bottom of the bulk head tho...
That can be done right at the bottom of the bulk head tho...
yea but i dont want it to come out near the pedals and i cant more it to the other side as its either to close to the gearbox or it'll be visible. might look at somewhere omn the exhaust tunnel.
anyway ive got the turbo intake pipe welded up today

Also got the engine pretty much all wired up and piped up, driveshafts fitted with new cv gaiters, exhaust is all on, and ive had it turning over but not had oil coming out of the turbo return, hoping its just cause the battery was pretty dead and not turning over fast enough otherwise ive got a serious problem somewhere. I ran out of time this morning tho so ive put the jump pack on charge and will try again tomorrow
Cheers
Rad looks nice and shiny to match the rest of the car, coming together nicely now.
I used the unused threaded holes in the block and oil pump for additional sensors, but the adaptor looks like it does the job well.

Cheers pal, gettin there slowly. Think i saw you on your way home after pv driving over the bumps on station road?
Progress seems slower than a little while back when you seemed to be doing inhuman amounts of work on it in a day but at least you're still going lol Yeah that'll have been me
Yea unfortunatly works getting in the way a little, tbf ive still doing more work than the thread shows tho. My units just down there if ya fancy poppin in tho pal, should be down all afternoon thursday and friday, hoping to get it running and strapped to the rolling road for some running in all being well

When my project lacked fast enough cranking; I added an additional earth onto the engine block (that helped a bit) but ultimately a higher CCA battery did the job. An 063 type bosch (s5) putting out over 500A
Im hoping its just cause the batterys flat atm. Im thinking of going for a small dry cell battery once its all up and running as normal batterys are a bit heavy for what i want. Ill try the extra earth tho, nowt to loose by sticking a jump lead on there

Great work, you've moved the rad forward alot, is this for later turbo clearance?
Ah right cheers. What likes the quality of it?
Looks spot on mate, heard bad things but im pretty pleased with it!
Great work, you've moved the rad forward alot, is this for later turbo clearance?
Cheers. The rad sits in the original rubbers at the bottom and sits a bit forward at the top. Its tight with the kkk so i have no idea what rooms gunna be like with a garrett there. Probably end up sitting it over the gearbox and make a tunnel into the passenger footwell for the exhaust
on my LET ive had to start it to get oil to come out of the turbo, it just doesn't crank fast enough to make sufficient pressure, a couple of 1/2 second bursts isn't going to do any harm.
also, you may have an air lock on the feed into the turbo, had this once too.

Ahhh cheers mate. Thats sorta what i wanted to here. How did you sort the air lock? Tip some oil into the turbo feed kinda effort??
you could put a little bit of oil down it regardless, I undone the nut to release the air, was a little messy though.
I started mine with just pressure on the gauge...
not had pressure on the gauge tho, otherwise i'd be happy. anyway, done a bit more today, iain came down to meet me which was cool, nice to meet ya pal! showed me what he did to get oil pressure, had a bit of a go at it but the batterys still dead so didnt get that sorted, will jump it off the ibiza tomorrow hopefully with more luck! also got the fan fitted to rad

would have loved to fit it the other side but that meant the rad sat at a funny angle which i didnt like. also didnt like the grey plug cover so painted that again

Nice to meet you too, happy to lend a hand if you need some spannering help. Car looks quality too, paint in the engine bay looks awesome.

Yea cheers pal, i'll deffinatley bear you in mind! Hopefully you can come see it running this weekend although i still havent had any luck with the oil pressure, i dont know whether to stick some fuel in and go for it or strip the pump off which im not keen on
Thanks. Yea the water from inlet runs to the turbo still?
Oh no how i run mine.. lol
Oh no how i run mine.. lol
Im sure it'll be fine..... Anyway on a more positive note, having read many posts about oil pressure on many different forums i found only 1 post which i liked, it said go for it. So after much faffing about with trying to prime the pump and getting oil everywhere id had enough, so i filled it up with fuel, got a bee battery and went for it! Fired up straight away with good oil pressure, afm reading 14s on tickover, although i do need to adjust the oil pressure reg, really happy, only ran it for about a minute but sounded pretty sweet, new lifters quietend down almost straight away so all in all a good afternoon
Will get the gear linkage set tomorow when ive got someone to help and should be good to start running in
Sure it will be yes. I was gonna say more on hoses. Glad it running ok. Good work.
More on hoses??? Do go on..
Well the rad small top hose, can just go straight to the turbo, doesn't need to go to the header tank. Saves a pipe in the bay and all that...
And blank the inlet water pipe?
I think ive piped the turbo up backwards, the pipe at the back of the turbo ive taken to the inlet as a feed, then the pipe at the front ive put to a y piece with the rad hose going back to the header
And blank the inlet water pipe?
That normally goes straight to the header tank.... Well from what i've seen.
I believe that the inlet on the front of the turbo in what in... The top/rear one is out... But that's what i've been/read/seen
i cant see it making much difference which way the water flows into/out of the turbo??
I have no clue, tbh. That why i added in the "i believe" bit...
not much of an update, but i have got the car running, all be it rather smokey, only had about an hour on the rollers so hoping it will clear up with some more running in, done a compression test seams all right, 185 1-3 and 175 on 4, and also done a leak down test today which seamed ok really, probably less than 10% loss. time will tell. ive dropped the oil and filled it back up with more mineral oil for the next running in period i'm really hoping it gets better.

Have you thought of running the tb cable around the other side of the inlet? Looks a bit tidier, more tucked away look.
yea seams a bit tight tho?
Shouldn't be, had mine like it for about 8-9years...
My lungs hurt after being in the unit with it running on the rollers.

You got a pic of where you routed it??
My lungs hurt after being in the unit with it running on the rollers.
Behave, you said it was getting better!! Haha. How ypur painting go??
It was getting better, after it filled the place with smoke lol Painting went badly due to my skill/paint mixing abilities so taking it somewhere where they're going to show me how to do it, don't think it reacted though.
I've read on many occasions a Corsa 1.2 16v throttle cable is the one you want to route the other way behind the inlet, assume it's a little longer.
Badly? How so? Yea might have a trip to loomes this weekend and see if theres any corsa kicking about down there

Don't think I got the mixture/settings right, came out all blotchy and lumpy and dry, not to worry missus's dad knows what he's doing with painting so I'm hoping to have a quick lesson this weekend! Didn't see any 1.2 16v models when I was there last weekend as I was looking for one myself, just lots of three cylinder ones.

Yea standard eco with evo 5 chip
If that std ecu by chip?
Standard ecu with a evo 5 chip in it
Very low on power and boost then.... Is that due to running it in?
Yea basically. Its only done a few hours on the rollers so only runnin 5 psi atm and havent taken it past 5500 rpm. Also thinking the cam is retarded to far so might reduce that a little. Want a bit more running in before i wind the boost up any more really but the weekends fast approaching and im determined to race it
Yeah keep it safe... And oh racing... Nothing safe there.
Thats actually not bad power considering its at the wheels and only running 5 psi
Yea i didnt think it was to bad considering
Looks and sounds awesome.

Not sure on how many miles its done really.
Wound the boost up to about 14psi today, ran good for a little while then started getting miss fire on boost. Thinking the coil was cooked tho as its fine on tick over and light throttle. Plus it was pretty hot. Will take plugs out tomorow and see what there saying too. Did sound pretty awesome before it started playing up!

What plugs and gap do you use? NGk escort RS turbos are good in a let with a .6 gap yours is probably just blowing the spark out
Im using nkg rs turbo plugs gapped to .6...
Well i havent updated over the weekend as had a little hiccup with the car and had to walk away from it for a few days. Thursday evening i finally managed to sort the miss fire out, used a set of old ht leads and it was fine. So set about doing some more runs on the rolling road only to hear a rather nasty noise. Found this little bugger wrapped around the cambelt

To say im pissed off is an understatment. Its the skirt that sits stound the outside of the water pump, totally sheared off, mangled the belt, snapped a bot off the tensioner and also seams to have ****ed a couple of my big ends. Hope thats the cause and not oil starvation anyway. Havent had the head off yet so not sure whether theres any more damage but either way it needs re building again. ****in cars!!!

Lovely finish on the out sides!
Cheers guys. Mirrors and grill primered ready for paint now. Not a bad finish considerind we dont have a spray booth. Ill give it a couple of months the flat and polish the lot too. Just want to get it out the way so i can crack on with the turbo now
So its been loooong time since i updated. Thought it was time to add a few photos of where the cars at now. Its all been stripped down including the engine which still needs a lot of machine shop work and full rebuild.
Here it is looking a bit of state compared to last year

Heard some noise the other night, thought you might have the LET running again! Boo!
Cage is going to be nice, you going for straight or cross door bars?

nah that was probably the golf. Dont know about the doors, dont really want to make it a pain getting in and out. Same with the rear, dont know whether to just leave it as a single piece or cross it. The trailer i use means i cant open the doors when its loaded so i have to climb through the boot. Its mainly a pod car too so its all a bit over kill i think really
Ah shame. Still really wanna see it. Cage is looking good tho, is it becoming more track based?

Don't think there's been much progress. Spends too much time welding his shonky Seat back together!!
Not so much progress on the white one no, little bit more of the cage is done, used so rose joints to mount the stering column, swapped the power steering onto the black nova, currently rebuilding the engine in the black one due to a school boy error!!
Been a long time since ive updated anything really. Have been plodding along though. Not got many photos for you. Added some gussets to the cage
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/150x100q90/911/2Q5IPS.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pb2Q5IPSj)
There are more which ill grt photos of. Heres the mock up for the column
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/150x100q90/673/x84HTj.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/ipx84HTjj)
Rebuilt the engine on the black nova with knife edged crank, acl bearings, steel rods and adjustable pulleys, plus heat wrapped the new exhaust manifold. Thats being run in slowly on the rolling road
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/150x100q90/910/yznMSS.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/payznMSSj)
Also had to call it a day with my ibiza cupra which was a shame but it did give me an engine to put somewhere. So this weeked...
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/150x100q90/673/SQdFbE.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/ipSQdFbEj)
So far ive got 3 mounts sorted, one driveshaft ready for welding and will hopefully machine the short shaft next week at work so i can shorten it.
Thats all for now. Enjoy.
Got to admire your dedication to keep going with this mate!! Just read the whole thing through!!
Glad your still working on the white one.
