I have been looking for a nova for ages for a project with the intention of going the XE route. What I am getting is a GTE that is just far too good to butcher. What's the best route to more power with the 1.6 lump?

exhaust system with 4-2-1 manifold, cam, airfilter and after that you coud take the head off to get it ported and polished

Is it worth going the carb route?

you can do but it can be costly by the time you have set bought them, the inlet manifold and a megajolt setup for it plus you can still do all the other bits i mentioned aswell and carbs are heavyer on the juice

Yes. Ignore most of the above, except for the cam and head work and get it set up properly on a set of forties. 140 plus isn't unheard of...

Would 45's be too big causing bore wash? I can get my hands on a set for relatively cheap

if you jet them right it wouldnt cause a problem as the 1.3 sport came with 40's from new, i sold my set of dellorto twin 40's for £150 a few months back and the inlet manifold for £120. i had mine on a 2.0 16v engine in my mk2 golf but o would buy that set of fireblade carbs that have just come up forsale on here for £350 which is about as cheep as your going to get a comlplete setup for tbh.

Are you implying you will be butchering it? Put an XE in there properly!

You can turbocharge the 1.6 if you have pockets deep enough.

i think fitting a 20xe does kinda 'butcher' a nova a bit..
Even sticking carbs on the 1.6 is a bit..
The second reply gives you some extra power whilst keeping the car genuine, factory looking i guess.

Doesn't matter now as it was a mid advertised shed I walked away from
