uninstall office and try again - see if it works that way.
if xp is doing stuff like that its gonna be a virus or a bug in the software
get an antivirues program and make sure you have all the critical updates

There is a security issue with the RPC service. This means someone is sending out coded messages that makes the RPC service fail.
First of all to stop it restarting while you try to sort it out.
Control Pannel
Administrative Tools
Services
Double Click on "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)"
Click the "Recovery" tab
Use the drop down menu's to change the First, second and subsequent failiures from "shutdown" to "restart Service"
Now you can use the net without the PC shutting down, but the problem still needs fixed. so go to http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp
This will allow you to download the correct patch for your PC. Once downloaded, install. Then follow the above steps again and return the settings back to what they were before!

look in task manager for a task called msblast
if its there then u have the virus
look in your windows system32 folder for the file
once u find it u need to end the process in task manager then delete the file from your computer
then reboot and install the patch on microsofts website
