View Full Version : What car to get next

I am starting to think about which car i should get next... as i will be buying my next one brand new and without finance i need to start sving now to buy it in 18 months time when the clio has served its 3 year finance deal.

I am thinking something small / medium such as for example the corsa or the astra. I am not sticking strictly to vauxhall - could be anything.

Anyone got any ideas or suggestions as to what car i might choose?

The car i choose will be a 1.6 or a 1.8 so dont go suggesting the clio 2.0 16v or 3litre v6 coz i wont be able to afford the insurance on it. :D

Pro's and cons / reasons why you think i should have one would be appreciated. Prices up to about 15k.

With insurance in mind, i reccommend one of these

http://www.honda.co.uk/cars/newcars/carBuilder.jsp?yearId=2003&modelId=10413&bodyId=10732&bodyDescription=3%20door&engineId=10405&badgeId=10419&transmissionId=&colourId=&colourAllocationId=

obviously go for the type-R if you can.

wisewood

civic type r is 18k. outside my budget.

not too fussed about something mad n flash, coz the missus is getting an elise.

You should be able to go upto insurance group 16-17 without feeling the bite that much.

The new Astra SRi's are nice, they are 2.0l 16v but the insurance really isn that high.

I am Buying a Lexus IS200 in the early part of next year, i was meant to be getting it now but decided to go for another holiday to Asia at Christmas again.

Plan of attack is now come home in January work for 2-3 months, buy another house then get the Lexus. The IS200 Sport is only group 12 so should save some on insurance.

I would steer away from buying a Brand new car, you could buy something less than a year old and save over 20%. You will get a lot more car for your money.

i knew someone would mention the "dont buy brand new" thing but i just wanna own one brand spanking car - dont care about losing money on it etc - not in the slightest...

Be nice to be MOT exempt for 3 whole years, and have warranty on it etc.

Baring in mind i dont know the prices of these cars

Pug 306/206 very nice looking cars

Corsa lovely to drive but loads of them on the raods now

Golf maybe too much over budget but very nice looking cars and the new GT TDI is faster than the normal GTI very impressive

i cant think of any others that i really like not much to choose from these days

No its fair enough to want to buy a Brand new one, but you can buy a second hand car less then 6 months old off a main dealer and still get all the perks.

And will be MOT exepmt for 2 years and 10 months

I have thought about buying a brand new car before but everyone i know who has regrets it as they are over paranoid about marking it in any way.

wisewood

306 no longer made - would have to be 307.
not sure about them... theyre ok though.

corsa i probably wont bother with - like you said too many about really, common as muck and over priced if you ask me.

Glof is alright, decent spec as standard etc but the high end models are expensive.

golf TDi is a brilliant car but expensive.

wisewood
12-08-03, 12:40 PM
just looked at the 206..

could have:

206 gti 180bhp 2.0 16v for 14995 otr.

for the 1.6 16v engines such as the xsi or the quicksilver its about 12k.
which aint tooooooo bad. thing is - do i really want a peugeot??
Renault is bad enough.

Dicko
12-08-03, 12:49 PM

Seen an amazing Mitsubishi Evo the other day, the number plate was...

EV03 WRC

Looked awesome, im going to buy one in 2007/8

Arent they supposed to have very weak heads? Have heard a few nasty stories about them warping etc under a normal strain.

wisewood
12-08-03, 01:48 PM
i am sure the good folk at mitsubishi will have that sorted out by then...

half the reason i am not wanting to get anything on finance and would rather save my pennies is because you dont know whats gonna happen over the next few years - i could end up getting a saxo vts or something stupid like that only to find that ford or vauxhall release a monster of a car that i would love, but now cant have a i am lumbered with a crappy saxo instead lol.

Tilly
12-08-03, 01:55 PM
im not on about that one im on about the older style zetec (not mini focus)

wisewood
12-08-03, 01:57 PM
mum has the older style zetec... snot a bad car really and pretty responsive but i just dont like the driving position of it.

besides which - they dont make them anymore, so cant get one brand new so its a big X on the list for that one.

Ben (lurk75)
12-08-03, 01:58 PM

will sound homo but if you want cheap/cheap to run and insure etc. and the bird is getting an elise then what about a smart car??

yes they are naff in principle but gotta cost sweet FA to run.

i personally hate them but i can see why they appeal to some folk.

going for a german car will cost you more to start with, but is better made etc

what about a rover/MG the 200/400 series versions are quite good and really in your budget too.

also try to negotiate with the dealers "im paying cash, what can you do to make me buy from you over the other dealer with the same cars" ;) be ballsy and get more than you should pay for

Citroen Xsara - Decent looks and performance

Can pick up a sporty 1.8 (used to be called VTR) and they'll be being replaced in 18mths or so you'll pick up a good deal.

Ben - W1 SEW is on option...
W15 EWD is another... not sure which one yet.

The missus gets an elise and i drive around in a fcukin smart car - i dont think so. I want to have a litlte dignity. People see them out front of the house and think i have an elise and the wqoman has the smart - then all of a sudden we walk out and she tears off in the elise while i plod away in the 599cc turbo smart car - NO NO NO NO NO!!!

Tilly
13-08-03, 01:30 PM
so what happend to her getting her type -r??

wisewood
13-08-03, 01:35 PM
she changed her mind - she has always fancied an elise ever since she first saw one - it means spending more money than she was going to getting an 18k type R, but it means she has the car she has wanted for years...

at first she wasnt sure but i kinda helped her make up her mind.
