I will try and explain this as clearly as posible so any of you lot good with looms / electrics etc etc will know wot im on abt.

Woke up today at slimjims as me and breeny stayed over last night and drove him to the paper shop at around 11 ish, on the way back my indicators stopped working, this had happened a week before and had been a blown fuse which was replaced.

We got back and i swapped the fuse below which uses rear lights and dash lights, they are both 10amp fuses, so i thought this wud be fine to get me home till i find another fuse etc.

Me and Breeny left at 4pm, he tells me a few roudnabts after leaving jims that my brake lights are not working, the indicators were tho (same fuse) and i thought, oh i see, the bulbs blew and then fuse possibly.

Then at some traffic lights all my lights started flashing randomly he said but then stopped, we then drove onto the dual carraige way and were crusing at 60mph, after 3 mils i noticed smoke from the fuse box and thought "WTF" then it set alight and started burning my leg!! By this time i pulled over with hazards on, looked at fuse box and the 1st line of fuses from the steering wheel have melted and the plastic around them, me thinks its fooked!

Cant work out why it happend, all i did was swap a fuse, waiting 3 hrs for the AA man and got towed home, car now on drive :(

As fuse is part of loom, me thinks whole loom might need doing, big job me thinks DOH.

Any ideas or advice wud be great b4 i use my credit card on an suto leccy as ive no money left wotsoever.

p.s. start job in 8 days so need to fix b4 then somehow, its 30 miles travel each way :(

Disconnect the battery (if you havent already!) Get whats left of the fuse box out and examine the wires behind it. get a new fuse box asap.
Cant really advise anymore without seeing how bad it is, replacing the a large part of the loom will depend on how badly melted it is.. :o

are you sure it wasn't a relay at the back that fucked up starting this? very strange for a fuse to start burning especially if it was a 10amp. a fucked relay can get quite hot and they do sometimes start to melt depending on what happens.
If its not something simple like that and you do need to change the loom don't let this worry ya its not as daunting a job as you might think. the hardest part is taking out the dash!!

Bad earth could cause all the above.

to take the whole loom out and swap only takes a few hours its not as bad as it first looks

I have a spare fuse box from a mk2 if you want it m8.

All fuses - no relays - some wire at the back (just cut straight out of an old 1 ltr but theyre all standard)

sounds like a bad short somewhere - check all earths and that non of the live wires (black or red) were touching anything metal - possible they shorted out causing the fire.

PM me if you want the fuse box

either bad earth or a few wires shorting. wouldnt be down to the fuse but would probly have been whats made them blow in the past!!

right sommet simalar happend to mine, but mine was the ignition and all the lights on the dash coming on.

it turned out to be a short behind the clocks. take them out and make sure the loom is securly fastened to the chassis. mine wasn't hence the wires from the loom rubbing on the petrol guage, retaining nuts/bolts.

it went through 1 thick red, 1 thin red and a thin brown.

all sorted now and it works as normal.

Just a place to check, might not be that at all but worth a look.

I had the dash flickering, n blowing fuses, it was the ignition coil n king lead at fault!!!!!
You could see the short from the centre of the coil 2 1 of the poles on the coil when the bonnet was up n the garge light was off!
