I was round the sister in laws today and went out to oversee the nephew on his bmx... Naturally I nicked it off him for a bit lol , it was sodding ace!!! Would I look a prize bell end if I got one to ride, and with some knobbly tyres would it work as a light trails/muddy fields bike? I know it isn't a long distance comfy setup but for short energetic stints I reckon it might be better than a proper xc.

Thoughts? I don't want to become some sort of redbull x games freak.

Look into a trials bike maybe? The modern ones have geo set up for BMX'y type stuff, you don't look a bell being 6ft on one and it's probably more passable on the trails with some knobbly tyres?

Downside is finding one with a seat is more difficult if you were after that, but since it's not long distance comfort... you don't need one

Ebay, old skool kona or marin, decent brakes and forks and youre laughing, bike you can play on, and still go for a little ride down the local in summer should the need take you :d

Typical example....

"Old skool" bikes are selling for as much if not more than proper modern xc's lol

Had a look at bmx's..... Feaking he'll, I thought they'd be £100 tops, seems they start at £150 and goto £1500 for no visible change lmao

BMX's are massive money these days, makes proper old skool mtb's seem like theyre worth 50p lol

I have recently 'converted' my freeride/dj bike into an xc style, by putting full xtr gears on it, changing the seat and sorting the front brake out so it works and most importantly fitted a drinks bottle holder lol. I did a 35 mile bike ride on a muddy path today, it was good, but the blokes on the cheaper/lighter xc style bikes were wizzing past us. My advise is to buy a specialized or equivalent for the muddy lane hacks, as there just so much more lighter and agile and made for the job.

We do have a specialised hardrock sport, but its a bit pikey and poo lol

Just wondered if a 20" bmx will cope enough for short but knackering rides :)

I love my old school bmx. Go for it fella. I currently have 10 Raleigh burners, 4 raleigh choppers, 1 grifter, 1 tomahawk and a skyway street beat. I ride mine all the time. I get loads of attention on them and people would remark about days gone by and the bikes they owned.
