View Full Version : Jons Nova Sport Project C318YRW
As a few people know from the thread in the Sportzone I have brought my old Nova Sport back, 10 years after I sold it. I am going to fully re build / restore it, quite to what spec remains to be seen and this has been the crux on the thread in the Sportzone, I have valued people opinions which have made me look at the project in a completely different light. However I do have allot of time before these finer details need to be set in stone. Before we get onto the project good and proper I thought I would put up a history of the car up to now as even before the Clarkson VBH video it had an interesting past, and also why I have such a soft spot for Nova Sports.
1986, I had just passed my driving test and I was working for the local Vauxhall Opel Dealer Courtenays Ltd. One morning standing in the service manager office a car fired up in the workshop making the most gorgeous burbling barking noise, I rushed into the work shop only to find the source of this rude noise was a white Vauxhall Nova with some Dealer Sport style stripes complete with a bright red tail box! Enter the Nova Sport and I was in love! Unfortunately being 18 with zero no claims my insurance company saw this differently!
1999 A16VTB had been sold a few years before and PNG founder Matt Searle comes for a weekend in Norfolk. He arrives for a meal at my house in his Nova Sport, a few bottles of wine later he leaves in a taxi for his hotel, entrusting me with the keys to the Sport to drive back the next day. Fantastic! I think I made that 4 mile journey last about 40 minutes! Let the search for a Sport begin.
Fast forward a couple of months to September and Trax, my luck was in, Mark Watts & Matt Searle were approached by the boy friend of a girl from Luton who had a Nova Sport for sitting in her Dads garage. The Sport had been stolen and chased by the Luton Police, much to the Police’s surprise the Sport managed to outrun the area Omega, the culprits had been eye balled and were well known to the local police who promptly dispatched another car to their address. On arrival they found them in the process of a number plate swap! I understand the Police were a little relieved when they lifted the Sports bonnet and saw the Irmscher goodies sitting there it certainly explained its pace, but were not initially convinced that it was all properly insured. Unfortunately (but fortunately for me) spooked by the theft and the amount of time the car was in the police compound, the girl did not want the car anymore so there it sat in her Dads garage for quite some time.
A few days after Trax Ian Archer myself and Matt Searle tavelled down to Luton, there sat C318 YRW a deal was done and I was driving back to Norfolk on trade plates in a Nova Sport complete with appalling brakes, misfire, non existent idle and makeshift polythene quarter light....I loved it.

Solid rear seat, parcel shelf gone..
For its first role the car was called into service to be used as the pattern for the Nova roll cage we used to sell, so the interior was striped out bar the driver’s seat. With the idle and misfire sorted I drove it was driven down to Cambridge. A week later the drive back was great the shell being noticeably stiffer and I even managed to out run Ian’s Cavalier 16V ecotec off a few round abouts. After this the car was covered up awaiting a proper strip down for a full restoration, or so I thought..
To be continued...
Fantastic! Awaits next instalment.......
Nice bit of history there.
Nice write up there Jon
I look forward to the next installment

Part 2..
In late spring 2000 out of the blue I get a call from Jeremy Clarkson’s production company. They want to do an ironic type of feature about buying a couple of old cars and modifying them. They were very up front about the whole feature in that there would be some races and the Nova driven by Vicky Butler Henderson would lose to Jeremy in a powerful but ultimately un cool Rover.
The original brief was to find a cheap Nova GTE so that we could turbo charger it. Unfortunately having looked at a few dealer trade in’s etc it soon become apparent that we just could not buy a car and do all the work to within their budget. So we suggested that we use our Nova Sport and some bits we had, then blag as much as we could using Jeremy’s name and they put their budget to just cover the bodywork, this way they saved a load of money and we got the body work sorted. The one proviso that it was kept Polar White but they could do what they wanted in vinyl, this would come back to haunt me when Vicky came up with her plan!
The one thing with this whole project was that we only had 6 weeks to do this including all the filming which was all scheduled and booked and therefore could not be moved Omg. This meant that on a couple of occasions we could not carry out work until certain parts had been filmed. We also end up doing something’s twice. For example we had to fit the engine to make sure it all ran okay due to lack of time only to take it out for some filming of it being fitted, all good fun!
http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n402/a11vxl/Nova%20Sport/Sport8sml-1.jpg
This first bit of filming took place in London in a Taxi firm’s garage behind Piccadilly station. They only change to the car was The PNG’s (Matt Searle’s) lone wheels! They had previously been on C888 HEV Matt’s Nova Sport and also on Walshies Red Twin 40 Nova. This just before Vicky announced her “vision of pink”
After this the car was straight back to the workshop for all the bodywork to be undertaken before being painted.

When I was looking at this picture recently I couldnt understand why we had left the stickers and mirror on the RH door, but in the pictures further down you can see this door leaning against the wall in the background, so we did fit a new door back in 2000, bonus!

In the body shop
http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n402/a11vxl/Nova%20Sport/Sport13sml.jpg
You can see the old door in the background, wish I have kept that door now though I still have the mirror with the case number on it!
To be fair due to the very tight time scale of the project, this was not in any way a proper restoration, however on the cars return from the body shop I spent a several evenings going through the shell cavity’s and under body with a waxoyl gun which is probably why despite its quick refresh it has lasted quite well.
Now it was a case of fitting the car out

With this done the car was up and running on a base file, then straight down to Webcon in Sunbury for it to be properly mapped.

After this it was back to North Walsham for the remainder of the stickers

Last of the stickers fitted then final finishing touch's ready for the next part of the filming where the Nova and the Rover would meet and do battle..
To be continued..

really nice right up. look forward to reading the following instalments...
The main filming day
This was due to be undertaken at Castle combe which was where we turned up at 6.00 on a damp Monday morning, however when the Rover was unloaded it was quickly discovered that it was far to noisy for Combe’s db limit, Jeremy did go a bit “Clarkson” about this and left a few of the Marshall’s quivering! So we had a quick relocate to Kemble airfield an old Top Gear favourite for Tiffs big power slides.
As you can see in the following pictures it was a very wet day, which meant due to the cars colour myself and Ian spent what seemed like most of the day washing the car. This was done for continuity as many of the shots were fimed out of sequence.

http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n402/a11vxl/Nova%20Sport/sport35sml.jpg
Filming over for the day, Jeremy asked if he could have a go in the Nova! He did a few laps of the handling circuit one way, did a handbrake turn then did a few laps the other way.
When he came back he said “take that bloody car to Vauxhall and tell them what you’ve done to make it handle and ask them from me why they couldn’t have done it!” He them said it would be perfect if we could tame the torque steer a bit, I remember thinking bloody hell you would want to drive a C20LET turbo one!!
http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n402/a11vxl/Nova%20Sport/sport34sml.jpg
The final bit of filming was the bit when Jeremy gets his trophy for winning. The cars needed to be filmed driving in front of a crowd, so this was done in the arena at Max Power Live. In this picture Jeremy was warming the crowd up with a few donuts in fact at one point he got so carried away that Vicky had to reverse the Nova out of the way as it looked like he was going to hit it, you can see the smoke lingering.

A great read and a brilliant piece of Nova History, glad the cars still alive and imo should be restored back to how it was for the shoot :thumb:

Belguim 2001, Walshie and Myself went over in the Sport to run the new engine in, he distracted me on the ferry when I was supposed to be shutting the bonnet, as a result it flippped over against the windscreen when leaving the port!, it lost some of the cheqeurs when it had the new vented bonnet fitted.
In the picture, me, Maff Searle, Walshie, and a local. Also Declan's Nova next to mine, a picture of Niek's engine bay, and Ian Searle's green Nova, anyone else's in there?

^^ july 2002 i think, look at the top right hand side of the pic
Excellent bit of history/story to go with the Sport.
As the car had not moved for 3 years and the cambelt was past its sell by date on time rather than milage I didnt dare fire it up, so it was pushed onto the trailer and brought back to the workshop. To re commision it so to speak, I checked the bore's with an endoscope and put some oil down the two give it some lubrication for when we first turned it over (without the plugs) I replaced the cambelt which actually looked quite good, better safe than sorry though.
http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n402/a11vxl/Nova%20Sport/IMG_1350sml.jpg
I gave the oil a long over night drain and replaced with a new filter and fresh oil. I also cleaned the air filters through and removed all the electrical connections to cleaned and lubricated them with contact cleaner. The car actually looked like it had been stage dressed for Halloween as there were cobwebs every where complete with a fair few spiders and snails, one month on and I think they've just about gone now!

It was then a filled with fresh Super unleaded and it burst into life. This snail got properly fed up when the engine fired up and was trying to flee! It was a good job I put some cardboard against the wall behind the car as the exhaust fired out a load of water more snails, spiders and gravel!
It was great to have the car running again but the only gauge that worked was the rev counter , I removed the dash and found the damp had really got into the circuit board and all the auxhiliary gauge connections.
http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n402/a11vxl/Nova%20Sport/IMG_1357sml.jpg
http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n402/a11vxl/Nova%20Sport/IMG_1359sml.jpg
However a good strip down and clean had all but the rev counter working again. Thanks to Mark (Novacabrio) who sent me a down a couple of dash's to play around with, I quickly found the the circiut board was shorting out. So now everything works, the brakes have been checked some light connections sorted. You maybe wondering why I'm going to do this just for a drive as I'm going to strip it all down anyway, the main reason is because my son who was 2 months old when I sold the car to Simon is desperate to have a go in it before it all come's apart, and I would quite like a drive to remind myself of what the old girl was like. Roll on some good / better weather :)

Hi Jon long time no see glad to sea you got your old nova back,i got the bug 18 months ago and got a mk1 sr ,look forward to see what you do to your sport, what about the new 1.4 turbo engine would still handle well and go well,as mine a hand full with a let, jason
So before I commited to buying back the Nova, I had to track down my old engine down. I wanted this engine in particular as the records show that it was the engine the car left the factory with. But like a #### I sold it back in 2007 with lots of other Sport stuf inc the interior! Anyhow after lots of searching I tracked the man down the good news was he'd never used it he only bought the job lot for the interior. The engine was still in his Garage complete. The bad news was it was a 688 mile round trip to get it  and he wouldnt let me have the interior back :(
http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n402/a11vxl/Nova%20Sport/IMG_1229sml.jpg
Here it is back at the workshop almost exactly as I sold it, I needed to find a new air box as mine was powder coated and he wanted that for his own Sport build.
I managed to find this a very good condition airbox.....

I could not believe my luck with these, the man I brought them off had had them in his garage for 26 years, He had bought a Nova Sport for his wife in 1985/86 and the dealer could not set them up properly, so after a couple of weeks of massive fuel consumption he told the dealer to fit the old single carb back on, these had been sitting in his garage ever since! They are like new, shame he left the red tailbox on his Sport though lol
That's awesome, original box and everything!

That's awesome, original box and everything!
I collected them from the man at his work and when he pulled that box from the back of his Skoda Yeti I was stunned
When he had told me about them on the phone I could not believe it and I couldnt get there quick enough, to the point that I drove there with a cracked femur / taylor bone joint and a ruptured ankle ligament!
Very nice find
I bet finding that lot has made the decision even harder with regards to putting the 1300 back in or not lol

Ah! Someone gets my thinking!
So having got the car ready to take out for a drive and some fun once it had all loosened up again, the weather changed for the worse :( In the end feed up of waiting I decided to put some miles on strapped to the dyno to shake it down.
http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n402/a11vxl/Nova%20Sport/IMG_1442sml.jpg
I'm now very pleased I did this as it turns out the engine was running very lean. I checked the fuel pressure and it was .3 of a bar down so I changed the fuel filter, which turned out to have allot of muck in it. The fuel pressure was still .3 down, so I then changed the fuel pump..bingo the fuel pressure was back to 2.5 bar.
http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n402/a11vxl/Nova%20Sport/IMG_1452sml_zpsc26b2328.jpg
The next night I put the car back on the dyno. Whilst its a little better it still much too lean, so first job off the new year is to get the injectors out and flow tested, I would imagine its more results off the car not having run for 3 years the nozzle tips could well be blocked / rusty..all good fun  :)
Got my copy of the dvd on christmas day, and yes i watched it before dinner lol
Love this car, and i hope you keep it as is Jon :thumb:
Can i ask, are your vents pressed in from the top? So there smooth on the outside... If so do you have a good pic of the bonnet? As i fancy some...

The bonnet was done for me by Cool Louvers, from what I remember the are pressed through from the bottom, I had to remove a section of the centre brace for the rear ones. The front outer pair curve backwards whilst the set in the centre at the back face forwards to collect and channel air down over the throttle body air filters.
Thanks for the ink Martin was not even sure if they were still about! pleased they are as they did a great job on my bonnet.

Good times John, ah the benifit of having the rolling road
Good times John, ah the benifit of having the rolling road
Yes Iain tis a very useful thing to have.
What with Christmas etc the Sport sat idle for a bit, however early Jan I sent the injectors to Webcon to flow test and check and they tested perfectly::confused:
http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n402/a11vxl/Nova%20Sport/IW031InjectorFlowTestsmall_zps7026a72f.jpg
The mine are the first 4 from the left the last one on the right is a brand new one, as you can see nothing wrong there with the flow.
The nice people at Webcon sent me an ECU to try just to eliminate this and still no change.
So back to the drawing board I must have missed something. After a bit of a think I realised that whilst I had drowned the inlet and throttle body flanges spraying from above with carb cleaner to find a leak, I had not done so up from underneath the bodies etc and low and behold found a leak, its only small but hopefully enough to cause my lean mixture problem. So off with the throttle bodies and inlet manifold and good clean down of all old gasket debris. Then its just a case of enlarging the standard gaskets to match the larger ports on the Swindon head and manifold.

Jon, it's great to read you have recovered the Sport. Excellent.
Back in 2001 when I was over at your workshop, you took me out for a spin in the Sport, still in its VBH-livery. To say I was stunned would be an understatement, I just couldn't stop grinning from the wee passenger ride you gave me on Fenlandshire's finest back roads. What a blast!!! :d:thumb:
I remember you asking me what to do with the Sport back then; either restore it to original condition, or leave it as it was at the time. I was in a bit of a dilemma and couldn't think of what would be best.
Fast forward 12 years and if being asked the same question, I'd now say "Sport with a few subtle mods", with a VBH-replica created next to it to commemorate a great adventure.
Anyway, good luck with your Sport and keep us posted. Love it! :)
Wow I'd had forgotten that Niek, was that when you stayed the night at ours when the diff adjuster seized?

Hi Jon any news?
Lee
Hi Lee I think I'm finally getting there with this.
http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n402/a11vxl/Nova%20Sport/inletmanifoldsml_zps88caf8ef.jpg
Here's the inlet going back on before the throttle bodies where refitted with new gaskets...
None of which fixed the problem, though given the size of the air leak in not really suprised, but it had to be done just to eliminate it!
After that its been a process of elimination just working through the sensors. I ran it again last night on the dyno with a new set of injectors which also made no difference, but as luck would have it whilst doing a bit of head scratching and thinking I left the dyno fan running and overcooled the engine without realising, the next run the fueling came back and by playing around with the heater and the dyno fan managed to get the engine temp to a point whereby the fueling was correct. So it looks like its a water temp sensor issue! as I type I'm just waiting a call back from Webcon as I speak as to whether the sensor fitted is the right one with the correct linearisation curve or that it has just failed. If only I had driven it at full throttle cold I would have seen it sooner :( but to be fair I hate doing this to any engine! I'm relieved to have found it as I was starting to run out of idea's!
The next step is a new sensor and a thermocouple in the top hose so I can recheck it and be a bit more scientific about the exact water temp reather than working of the vague dash gauge
On a positive the engine has had a fantastic and complete health check

Not completly made up my mind on the exact spec, I'm on a mission to get all the missing parts that I sold a few years back which was a mistake! So I'm after seats anyone! :)
I have purchased a Quaife box like it had when I previously owned it. And the Raceline RL7's wheels will be staying. Suspension wise I'm leaning towards 2 way adjustable coil overs, but I have loads of time to think about this as I just starting the strip down at the moment.

Or has that decision not been reached yet lol

Its been a tough one but it looks like the jury has gone with the 1.3 Sport option, After all the combination of high revving 1.3 on Webbers with the Quaife box adding to the sound track is a great combination....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bF7fsUCm9ew
It would need to be a fairly tweaked one, I've even had the daft thought to try and run Webber Alpha on it as the Throttle body's do fit the Irmscher Inlet manifold. I would need to see if the I can adapt them so that the Irmscher airbox work with it, plenty of time to decide on that though!
I want to soarce some original seats namely the fronts (I think I have the rears sorted) so I have got them for the long term future. To start with I would like to keep the car light so I'm on the look out for some Kevlar Magnums or Recaro's like it had on the Clarkson Video.
I have a pair of these very light weight Recaro's in Kevlar but they are just to modern for this project.

Hi Stuart the Sport is coming on I've got it stripped now and will be starting the body repair work soon, but have recently bought an awful old MOT failure C reg Nova base for some additional trim spares etc so have been stripping that to scrap it, so I can get it out of the workshop as I'm taking up to much space with what Sarah calls my rusty wrecks!

In fact part of the dicision in moving it back to the small block engine was made early this year, when for the first time in a long while we had a Nova SR in for a cambelt & water pump. The car was standard but the road test was still enjoyable and I was pleasantly suprised by the way it went. So with a bit more power from the twin 40's etc combined with a little less weight and a close ratio gearbox it should be entertaining.
Bits left to source.. some glass as some of my original had got some mig splatter on, unfortunately this happened when the roll cage was developed, I was hoping that the biege car would donate some glass but it had been etched  I also need a pair of rear coat hooks as Ive not found any yet.
I'm sure that box of bits is used in my spider build as well!
Hey Mark, yes some of those box's and bits were yours. :)
Nice collection of parts there Jon.

Can't wait to see more progress on this Jon
Just over 4 years ago C318 went into storage, however I pleased to say its back in my possession, in the workshop complete with all the spares I had amassed over the years. Thanks to Kevin for looking after it so well in its Carcoon and to Ian, Marc & Su for all the help going to collect and loading the mountain of parts. So its back on with the restoration again...:)
