View Full Version : paint guns
Anyone had much to do with HVLP paint guns? Need 1 to paint the bay out on the hotrod. Been lookingat them on fleabay but a little worried about the quality of the job out of it! :d
The better the gun the better the finish. Iirc hvlp is just the larger fitment end and pipes in side, so youll need a matching end for the lines. Devilbliss(sp?) make the best guns.

sata is the best gun i have ever used blow devilbliss out the water everytime
I looked into it a while ago, basically for ~£100-150 or so you're looking at devilbiss gti, try and get a gti pro with a certain air cap (i forget the code) if you can, or an iwata is very good and a bit cheaper because devilbiss is the better known name. Less than that, older models etc but I always figured it was worth buying something current/popular so spares are always available and it's something to last/keep for years ideally
Sata are mega expensive for the pro's and a bit more fragile from what I read, but fantastic finishes.
Cheers lads think that pretty much answers my question don't have that sort of budget and really don't want a sh*@e job so prob work out cheaper to pay a pro to do it! :d

I've been on a research project in work which requires an airless spray gun, been using the wagner w180 it had pretty good atomization, the pattern wasn't too good but i'd say its possible to spray an engine bay with it
Research project? You get me 1 cheap like? lol

I remember my mate was on his 1st day as an apprentice painter and turns up with his £800 paint gun lol years later the main painter guy uses a £150 one
So its more technique that the gun? Or was your mate just really bad? lol

For a start what paint are you going to be using
They are more adjustable, so air and paint flow for a start. But as above, what paint are you using? Do you have a compressure up to the job?

No, it was bought specially for the job.
Basically its research into the effects of agents that are put into a ships ballast tanks, when ships are sent out full they reach thier destination and the ballast tanks are filled and things are added to kill any organism, they wanted plates sprayed certain thicknesses to resemble the layered paint inside a ships ballast tanks, these plates are then put into a ballast tank for 6 months and tests taken.
I don't think he has a compressor that's why he's asking about HVLP
